Week Two Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: What national or global data does your school examine to improve student academic performance (e.g., PISA, TIMSS)? How might a shift to examine national and worldwide data about student academic performance influence curriculum enhancements in the United States to better align with top-ranking nations? Review the College’s Conceptual Framework and answer the following question: How does this topic link to the College’s Conceptual Framework and the framework’s philosophical relationship to effective teacher preparation? My district compiles data and information from the NWEA MAP test. This nationally normed assessment tool is used to measure growth and achievement in math and reading. This test is administered three times per year: Fall (September), Winter (January), and Spring (May). Once the students complete each test, the data is collected by both homeroom teachers, RTI teachers, and administration. As a homeroom teacher, I use this data to differentiate whole group instruction & create meaningful and engaging small group activities. As each testing session approaches (except for the initial test in September), I use the data to create Review Fridays where my students are put into different small groups based upon individual strengths and weaknesses in individual content areas. These groups are meant to give the students extra practice in a specific topic (Numbers & Operations, Geometry, etc) in order for them to hopefully achieve growth. This year, our school is piloting a Math Learning Academy based upon the MAP Math data in order to help the students who are right on the cusp of state/national norms. We are hoping to help these students who would normally not get any additional support outside of normal classroom time like RTI students would. If school districts within the United States would begin to examine assessment results from around the world, they would be able to study education policies from
countries that are extremely successful with educating their students academically, socially, and emotionally. This topic links to the College’s Conceptual Framework for effective teacher preparation through engaging in reflective practice. More specifically, it requires teachers to reflect on assessment data in order to tailor instruction to each child’s individual needs.
