1.
Bakhtin talks about the “unfinalizable” self. What does this mean? (5 points)
What Bakhtin means when talking about the unfinalizable means that each individual will eventually come to a consciousness while exchanging dialogue with another person.
2.
Where does culture get ideas about the “ideal” self? According to Bakhtin, why/how does
the body engage in aspects of the grotesque? Give 2-3 specific examples in culture where
the body exhibits grotesque behavior? (5 points)
Culture gets their ideas about the ideal self based on the reactions that they get from others. The people around you are the ones that influence you to try and become a more ideal person.
3.
Define “homogeneity” as it pertains to group communication. How and why do groups become homogenous? (4 points)
Homogeneity is a quality or state of being similar in nature or having consistent composition or structure. Over time, groups begin to think more like each other, leading to this homogeneity.
4.
Define “affiliative constraints.” Give an example
of a group situation where one might face “affiliative constraints.” Be specific! (4 points)
CAS 303, Exam 4, 2
Affiliative constraints are when members of a group hold back in decision discussions due to a desire to preserve healthy relationships among group members.
5.
Give one pro
and one con
of “group insulation.” (4 points)
Group insulation brings about more organization and structure to a company, but if the company starts to have differences, that could put the company at stake.
6.
Define groupthink. Define how and why groupthink happens. Summarize The Crucible
and discuss its relationship to groupthink and the Salam Witch Trials. (5 points)
Groupthink is something that happens when a group of people come to an agreement without using any logical thinking or weighing the implications or alternatives. The Crucible is an older play, written by Arthur Miller, that describes the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Group think is very evident in this story. For example, the girls, who were led by Abigail Williams, are continuing to accuse others of witchcraft, despite the warning of the sin of lying under oath.
7.
Define “reflexivity” as it pertains to power? Why should you be reflexive about organizational norms? (4 points)
During the studying process, reflexivity commonly refers to the analysis of one’s own views, decisions, and behaviors to see if they could have influenced the research. You should be reflexive about organizational norms because of the constant changing of the world and societal norms.

changing society that they live in.
12. Explain the following statement: “We all perform according to scripts.” Give 2 cultural rituals you participate in. (5 points)
This statement uses theater as a metaphor in saying that people, similar to actors, perform our actions according to a script. If we all know our parts of the script and we all play our roles well, our social interactions will flow seamlessly and seem meaningful, just like in a good play. Two cultural rituals I take place in would be Easter Dinner and Christmas Eve Dinner
