Worldview Analysis and Personal Inventory Melissa A. Doty Grand Canyon University PHI 413 Ethical and Spiritual Decision Making in Health Care Dr Steven Ledbetter October 8, 2023 Worldview Analysis and Personal Inventory Being able to reflect on your personal relationship with spirituality and beliefs will make them stronger. There are times when we feel strong in our faith and find joy in it as well. Then there are the times that we question our beliefs and spirituality. Reflection throughout our lives can help to deepen our beliefs, re-evaluate things in our lives and help to prepare us and keep our strength in times of trouble. As healthcare professionals we need to maintain that strength for ourselves from within, and for our patients. Perspectives of Healing Christian Perspective in Healthcare In Christianity, their views are surrounded and based on the works of the Lord. The Lord gave us all an assignment in life, and if you are blessed to be in healthcare it’s because the Lord chose you to do that. You are to do the works of the Lord onto others through your profession.
When it comes to the patient’s side of things, they view that God gives us what we have the strength to handle. When we feel weak, we reach out to other Christians and ask for prayers so that the Lord can hear us and help us in our time of need. Christians look to the Lord as their guide and savior for all aspects of their life. They tend to seek His direction and continue to do His works. Postmodern Relativism in Healthcare Postmodern relativism in healthcare allows for a wider range of diversity to be accepted. This means there is no monopoly on a certain belief system or spirituality in healthcare to deter people of other faiths and spirituality from seeking the care they need and deserve. Healthcare should be a safe zone for every individual and their faith and beliefs should not be seen as less than anyone else’s. When a patient is sick and is seeking treatment they need to rely on their own belief system to get through their tough times, equal to everyone else. No one has the answers to the harder things in life, especially not healthcare workers. Scientism The belief in scientism is very black and white. It is based on those are the facts that have been proven, they are solid, these facts have been tested to be true and that is all we need to know in healthcare and other aspects of life. There is a scientific reason for everything, not everything has been identified or discovered yet but they will continue to investigate and they will find the answers in a scientific method to explain everything. Scientism is based on a black and white, fact-based point of view, but there are arguments made against them. One of the main arguments against scientism is that it is self-refuting, this is primarily because reality cannot be proven. No matter what, at this point in our lives, reality is an aspect that no hard science can be used to be proven within the black and white views that scientism
maintains. The second argument against scientism is that it is unable to prove morality along with reality. There is no black and white explanation for knowing why people make the choices they do. Ethically most humans know the difference between right and wrong, and yet there are vast differences in what is considered right and wrong along with various definitions of right and wrong. Overall, it seems that most people follow and abide by common definitions of what is considered to be “right” or “good”. Whether they follow a religion or have a specific type of spirituality, people can generally agree on the differences between right and wrong. Then there are a few people, outliers, that even if raised in a good home with spiritual and religious values choose to do the things that are considered wrong or immoral. There is no scientific explanation for the reasoning behind these differences as of yet. Maybe one day they can figure out within a scientific method why people make the choices they do. Ultimate Reality This is the overall understanding that there is one maker, our Lord, who has created the universe and everything in it. This is when we know and understand that the Lord governs everything in our universe and it is our duty to realize this and follow his laws and do his good works. When we achieve ultimate reality, this is when one understands the relationship between the human being and the Lord and they know what part they have to play in His plan. Human Beings Human beings were made in the image of the Lord, they are the land soldiers the Lord created to continue to do His works here on this planet. We are flesh and blood made in the image of the Lord. We all are here on this planet to do His good deeds and treat each other fair and as equals. When this doesn't happen it brings so much sorrow to the Lord. We as a whole human being need to do better.

Knowledge Knowledge is a difficult attribute to explain. Knowledge is when you know things in life that can help benefit others and possibly yourself, and yet you choose to stay quiet. In Christianity, knowledge is when we understand the truths the Lord wants us to know and understand. We are to understand the circumstances of our actions as the Lord has laid them out for us. Knowledge to me is knowing what you don’t know. Having the capability to understand that no one knows everything and everything in life is a learning experience. When an individual can acknowledge that fact that they understand that they will never know everything about anything is a genuine type of knowledge. We are human beings and we need to take everyday lessons as an opportunity to learn and grow. Basis of Ethics My personal basis for ethics comes from human decency. This is basically from the Golden Rule, which is to treat those around you as you would like to be treated. I have literally taken this message to heart and strive everyday to listen, be compassionate and understanding to every person I meet. This has lead me to see all humans as equals. I base my values in ethics on this Golden Rule and seeing everyone as equals. I understand the vast majority of things that are right and wrong. I know that the things that are deemed wrong are the ones that hurt others. In my mind if anything that I do has the potential to hurt someone else, I will give it a second thought and find a way to do something without hurting another person. I believe this stems from the fear of having harm done to me. I want to put positivity into the universe and hope that is what returns to me. That is my baseline for my ethics. Purpose of Existence Does anyone really know what the purpose of existence is? I think we all do have an idea
of what the meaning of life might be, there are always various theories. I keep thinking about this throughout the different stages of my life. I think the answer to this question changes as my life changes. When I was younger I thought the purpose of life was to live hard and die young. After I became a parent, the purpose of life was to create life, continue humanity and be the best parent that I could be. As I am older and my children are all almost grown, my purpose at this time in my life is to be the best person I can be. My purpose is to help as many people as I can, to be a good memory to as many people as I can be. Bring joy and happiness to the world. I feel this right now as deeply as I can within my soul. Results Life is always changing and the purpose for this is for us to grow and change. By accepting these changes we acquire more and more knowledge. As we grow and acquire this knowledge, we begin to realize how much in life we do not know or understand. This allows us to yearn to learn more and grow. Life is always changing within all of us all of the time. As time goes on changes continue on simultaneously. It is what we do with what we know and how we live our lives is how we will be remembered and how we leave our mark on this planet. Spirituality and beliefs grow and change as we grow and change. Everything we believe will evolve throughout time, if you find someone who still believes everything they did as an adult from when they were a child, this is a sign of lack of growth in spirituality, knowledge and emotionally. This seems to be fairly rare, but it does occur for various reasons. All we can do is try to understand one another. We do not have to share our beliefs, but we can still listen to others. There is no right or wrong in what a person needs to believe to get through their life. Everyone’s experience in life is their own, it is not our place to judge.
