Week Four Discussion
Hello everyone,
For this week’s discussion I have chosen argument #1.
What is the conclusion?
The conclusion of this argument is that it is predicted that if the city were to prohibit
skateboarding at Central Plaza, then business will return to its high levels.
What are the premises?
The number of shoppers has steadily decreased over the past two years while
skateboarding became more popular.
Many store owners believe the lack of business is due to the skateboarders.
There has been an increase in vandalism and litter which is likely from the skateboarders.
Is the argument inductive or deductive?
I believe argument #1 is more in the nature of an inductive argument. A deductive
argument is when one can infer the conclusion must be true because the premises are true
(Facione and Gittens, 2016 p. 159). Argument #1 does not have a definite truth to the
conclusion, it is based off prediction, there is no absolute guarantee.
Is it strong or weak? Explain.
This argument would be considered strong in my opinion. Although it’s premises and
conclusions are based solely on general prediction and uncertainty, the premises are
strong enough to lead the conclusion to be
probably
true because of logical inferences,
although the reasons for the decline could be for an abundance of other reasons besides
the skateboarders.
