Week Eight Discussion Hello class, happy week eight! Should I respect the views of a misogynist – a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women? I think there are many avenues to take when evaluating this question. Yes, I should respect their views even though I think they are wrong. There was a book written by Kate Manne, she summarizes that there are misconceptions with misogyny, and it should not be understood just as the hatred of women, but it also includes controlling women, policing them, and punishing the ones who question male authority (2018). Strong critical thinking about social policies demand that we respect those with whom we disagree (Facione & Gittens, 2016 pg. 344). I think my views could be considered bias, as I am a woman, but I also believe its morally wrong to be prejudiced against anyone – not just women. To despise specific women due to actions or situations that lead to the person to feel that way is different. But for someone to be prejudice against a whole gender of people is unethical. What if this question was about race or religion? That is also unethical. We must think of the moral or cultural views of a misogynist. As I stated before, there are certain situations that would be different such as what if this person was abused by a woman their entire life? So now they “hate” women. Would I feel differently because their upbringing led them to have these views? Probably, I would probably not be as angry or disgusted by their view but also state that not all women deserve to be despised because of 1 bad woman. Some cultures still view women as undeserving of basic human rights - some would view these people as misogynists, as this can be either man or woman. Is that correct? Would I feel differently and respect their views because it’s part of their culture? Facione and Gittens stated that strong critical thinkers follow reasons and evidence wherever they lead, even if they go against beliefs (2016 pg. 344). There is so much room for interpretation with this question, but I think being prejudiced against an entire sex, race, religion, culture is unethical. References Down Girl . Kate Manne.
