Unit 5 Assignment Define the demarcation problem. The demarcation problem, also known as the boundary problem in philosophy is defined as the “how” and “where” to draw the lines around science. The boundaries are labeled between science and pseudoscience. What were the three central projects taken on by the Positivists in developing their Empiricist view of scientific knowledge. The three central projects taken on by the Positivist were developing a view about what science theory is, the problem from distinguishing science from non-science, and giving an account of scientific explanation What is Popper's concept of falsifiability about? Karl Popper’s concept of falsifiability says that scientific theories are characterized by predictions that future observations may revel to be false. When these observations falsify hypotheses, scientist can respond by modifying the theory, rejecting it, or keeping the theory as is, while changing an auxiliary hypothesis What is Kuhn's idea of paradigm shifts about? Thomas Kuhn’s idea of paradigm shifts says it’s is a fundamental change in the basic concepts and experimental practices of a disciplined. When present theories fail to explain a phenomenon and someone suggests a new explanation, science has a paradigm that remains constant.
What was the importance of the Deductive Nomological model of explanation developed by the Logical Positivist, Carl Hempel A deductively correct argument is the form of a scientific explanation. The only difference between an argument and an explanation is the purpose of each.
