EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY 2 Abstract Leadership is something that is developed over time through experiences. Not everyone is cut out to be a strong leader who can communicate clearly, build positive relationships, and create a positive impact on the lives of the people they encounter. If I were to lead a school it would be my goal to work with all stakeholders and create a positive climate in which I am able to understand their expectations and work towards meeting them. I also will need to be able to hold all stakeholders to the same high expectations and not change those based on situations or people. Finally, as a leader I will strive to create an environment were all students and staff feel they can be successful no matter what and they are able to become positive and productive members of society. In this positive environment that I create it is my hope that everyone feels included and that they can communicate with me regardless of the situation. Keywords : communication, relationship, diversity.
EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY 3 Educational Leadership Philosophy Leadership uses positive means to achieve positive outcomes. Furthermore, people want leaders who listen to and understand their needs and who can relate to their circumstances" (Northouse, 2021, p.10). As a leader it is necessary for me to have the ability and willingness to serve others. "As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same on to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" ( King James Bible , 1769/2017, Peter 4:10). As an effective leader I will be one that is willing to step in and help in any situation and help my staff be successful by assisting when needed. "But it shall not be so among you: but whosever will be great among you, let him be your minister" ( King James Bible , 1769/2017, Matthew 20:26). Also, as a leader I want to surround myself with people who will continuously challenge me to make me a better and stronger leader. Without these people and challenges I as a leader would become stagnant and not have the ability to rise above when challenges come my way. Philosophy of Educational Leadership When thinking about educational leadership and what it should look like one needs to fist establish what type of leadership they want to convey. “Leadership occurs when you move people from where they are to where they ought to be” (Blackaby & Blackaby, 2011, p. 34). Leadership needs to be built on the foundation of trust and respect. Without these two key components a leader will not be successful. As a leader I need to be willing to support and receive the support of all stakeholders in order to gain their trust and respect. Having the support, trust, and respect of all stakeholders will ensure a positive and successful school environment. “A cause beyond oneself becomes a cause beyond one’s school” (Glickman et al., 2018, p. 42). Also, as a leader I need to be clear with my expectations and follow them because if I do not then this will lead to a decline in the trust and respect I have earned. Another key aspect in this entire

EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY 4 situation is accountability. That means holding myself and all stakeholders accountable for all actions. Leadership Practice When thinking about leadership practice I feel that this is where you establish what you as a leader see a learning experience being for the students of your school. You need to establish an atmosphere that is beneficial to high quality teaching, high academic achievement, and ensure that students are able to be creative positive members of society. “Those who espouse democratic schools argue that a democratic school community prepares students for democratic citizenship, promotes ongoing school improvement, fosters teacher growth, and results in improved student learning” (Glickman et al., 2018, p. 46). With this being said empowering students and staff alike is a key component to successful schools and successful leadership. Students and staff alike should feel that their concerns are heard and that they are being respected and changes come about when needed. “Creating an environment that is conducive to learning begins with integrity and incorporates biblical and practical principles” (Claxton, 2013, p. 40). Relationships “Good leaders understand the work that needs to be done and , at the same time, can relate to the people who help them do the job” (Northouse, 2021, p. 79). As a leader one must develop positive relationships with all stakeholders in order to achieve a school climate that is conducive to learning and success. As a leader in my current setting I have learned how to develop these positive relationships and the work that goes into achieving them. The biggest thing I have learned is that I need to be able to collaborate with others and be willing to delegate or share responsibilities. When it comes to delegating responsibilities though I know that I have to still be willing to support people when they are fulfilling these. “Principals who have developed the
EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY 5 capacity for distributed leadership in their schools are consistently the most successful in leading their schools toward improvements in instructional and management processes” (Claxton, 2013, p. 110). I have also learned the necessity to always have clear and open lines of communication. That is the key to building these successful and positive relationship. Without communication things begin to fall apart. Having these clear and open lines of communication will allow your staff and students alike feel that they can express their concerns and that as a leader you will listen and work towards a solution. Diversity As a leader understanding those you serve is key to having a successful school system. Students and staff alike come from varying backgrounds and cultures. As a leader you need to ensure that you have staff and fellow administrators who are understanding of these differences and are willing to work with each other and the students to ensure there is a positive educational environment. As Glickman et al. states there is growing diversity in the United States and a continuing achievement gap between student populations, so addressing these situations is a growing critical need for our schools. In order to address these diverse situations as a leader you need to help your staff in developing a school atmosphere and educational setting that will meet the needs of these students and that we are not just following what “traditional” schooling looks like. As an educational leader I will lean on members of the community to help in ensuring that I am meeting the needs of all students and my teachers are meeting the educational needs of all students in our building. In doing this and adapting to the diverse population we serve we will see an increase in the academic achievement of all students and also the success of our school as a whole.
EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY 6 Conclusion As a famous baseball coach, John Scolinos, once said This is the problem in our homes today. With our marriages, with the way we parent our kids. With our discipline. We don’t teach accountability to our kids, and there is no consequence for failing to meet standards. We widen the plate! This is the problem in our schools today. The quality of our education is going downhill fast and teachers have been stripped of the tools they need to be successful, and to educate and discipline our young people. We are allowing others to widen home plate! Where is that getting us? (para. 33-34). This is especially important in todays educational society and is what is key to being a successful leader. You need to hold all stakeholders to the same high expectations and not change them based on situations or people. Through my experiences both as a current leader and through this course I have learned the importance of certain aspects of leadership and what qualities I must posses to be successful.
