According to Lindsey Godwin, moral imagination is “the ability to discern the aspects embedded within a
situation and develop a range of alternative solutions to the situation from a moral perspective” (2015).
This refers to the ability to empathize with different perspectives within a workplace and go beyond
one’s own interpretation and outlook of how things “should be”. Moral imagination encompasses ethical
decision-making, empathy, compassion, and a responsibility to care for others’ well-being. By
implementing moral imagination, individuals and organizations have the opportunity to identify
underlying issues and take a morally responsible approach to find a solution.
I have been employed by places that operate with moral imagination, but have also had employers who
could greatly improve in certain areas. I was previously employed by Belk, a department store, mainly in
the southeastern region. They provide clothing, home products, accessories, beauty products, etc (Belk,
n.d). I was only employed by one store in South Carolina, so I cannot speak to the entire organization,
however, this particular store could improve upon its commitment to diversity and inclusion within its
workforce. Diversity and inclusion are two aspects that are vital within any workforce and Belk could
improve from strengthening their efforts to foster a more diverse workplace environment.
In order to improve diversity and inclusion within its workplace, Belk can set goals and targets directly
related to increasing the amount of representation within its workforce and leadership positions. To do
so, Belk would need to foster a moral imagination approach and imagine the new possibilities that are at
hand (Werhane, 2002). This would be evident in their hiring and recruitment processes, inclusive policies
being implemented across the organization, and diversity training and education being offered to current
employees and leaders. Additionally, Belk could implement employee resources groups and focus on the
implementation of new diverse and inclusive practices across their stores.
By implementing Werhane’s moral imagination framework and increasing diversity and inclusion within
its organization, Belk would see a variety of benefits and be responsible for positive social change within
the community. By encompassing a workforce and leadership team that is culturally diverse, Belk would
be a better representation of its community, thus creating stronger bonds with its customers and
building a positive brand reputation. Additionally, by having a diverse team, Belk would see an increase
in their innovation and creativity, as there is a diverse range of perspectives bringing new ideas to the
organization. This would aid in their attraction and retention of talent, aiding in their overall growth. Belk
as an organization is committed to creating an inclusive environment for employees and customers. As
this particular store begins to address the issues at hand, it will become a more sound, moral, and
socially responsible organization.
