My Moral Compass
Theories:
Utilitarianism focuses on the results of consequences of our actions. It treats intentions as irrelevant. This theory is other-regarding, meaning we should act to produce the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Good consequences equal good actions. (

Deontological ethics has rules that distinguish right from wrong. This theory does not weigh cause and effect. It tells us not to lie, cheat and steal. In deontology, you must follow the rules. (Ethics Unwrapped, 2022)
Virtue Ethics tells us we are not born with virtue. It is something we must develop to become a good person. We must ask ourselves what kind of person do we want to be. Virtue Ethics places importance on a person who is honest, trustworthy, and generous. (Giles, 2019)
Explanation:
Utilitarianism ethics created my role at the healthcare facility I am employed at. My job as a prior authorization specialist was made for two reasons: the first being due to insurance companies
requiring notification and approval for medical procedures. The second reason being it took a very time-
consuming duty off the nurse’s plate. Under this idea, creating this role did the most good for our patients and nurses. Deontological ethics is something that I can use every day. For example, my husband has previously taken this class. By following Deontological ethics, I obey the rule do not cheat. As it would be easy to use his previous assignments. Virtue Ethics are followed every day whether I realize it or not. Each day regardless of the situation, I strive to be a good person and make myself better. Compass Applied:
Recognizing an ethical issue:
Should hospital workers be required to get the covid 19 vaccination or be forced to resign from their job? Considering the parties involved:
The parties involved in this ethical issue are patients and health care workers. Relevant information:
Does the hospital worker have a religious exemption or a medical condition that prevents them from getting the vaccine?

Are other hospitals forcing this mandate?
Is this mandate legal?
How will patients be affected?
How will I be affected?
Actions and Alternatives:
Based off of my compass, the approach that should be used for the issues is Utilitarianism.
This theory tells me to get the vaccine. Getting the shot benefits the most people. Patients need healthy hospital and clinic workers. It also secures employment, money is required for our most basic necessities. Make a decision:
Utilitarianism is the best approach for this issue. Utilitarianism tells us to do what is best for the majority of people. If the hospital worker does not have a condition that could be exacerbated or a religious reason to not get the shot, the best thing to do is get the vaccine. The vaccine will not only protect the health care worker but also the patient. The worker will also retain their employment and
continue getting a paycheck. By keeping their job they will be able to continue providing for themselves and their family. Deontological ethics could also be followed in this situation. If your employer tells you that you must get the Covid 19 vaccination, Deontological ethics tells us we must follow the organizations rules. Virtue ethics cannot be applied as well as the other two. This theory places less importance on our obligations. In virtue ethics, not getting a vaccine does not make you a bad person. Reflect on the outcome:
By choosing to follow the Utilitarianism ethic, I believe the heath care worker would elect to get the vaccine. Doing so will secure their employment. It will protect the individual by helping to make their
covid infection less severe. Being inoculated will also protect the patient.
