1 Option 2 Week 10 Primary Assignment LA 400 Professor Thies October 29, 2023 Abstract
2 Option 2 In this week's assignment, I will be discussing morality as well as sharing images that display an individual acting as an agent of moral change. The image(s) will be shared after the writing portion of the assignment. Morals can be defined as one’s standards and or beliefs of what they believe to be right and wrong to do. Within the United States and throughout the entire planet, every single person has a
3 Option 2 different set of morals but some of the standards seem to be universal. Over time these norms have changed, and when looking through images of people who were agents of change, Jackie Robinson comes to mind right away, seeing the image of his jersey reminds us just how far not only the sport of baseball has come, but how far the country has come as well. Jackie Robinson was the first African-American baseball player to have participated in an MLB game in the modern era. Prior to his historic and barrier-breaking debut baseball leagues were segregated with the MLB being an all-white league and there being Negro Leagues for people of color to participate. Jackie Robinson was offered by the Brooklyn Dodgers to play on their team, and Robinson had known the reaction there would be to his participating in a league that had been designated for the white man for its entire existence up to that point. The standards in the country were segregated as the norm was having people of color and white people being separated and one race clearly having more privilege than the other. As discussed in one of this week's readings, the role of collaboration is a big factor in moral change, meaning that people need to work together to make that progress. “The key point for the evolution of morality is that early human individuals who were socially selected for collaborative foraging through their choice of partners developed new ways of relating to others” (Tomasello, 2018). During this time in the United States, there was no effort of trying to relate to Robinson or other people of color by the majority and many saw Robinson’s participation as disgusting and a terrible look for the MLB. A negative form of nationalism was viewed here as “Nationalism is defined as “a feeling of unity among a group of people, born out of their common values and history, giving them pride in their nation” (Trend, 2018). Many whites viewed the United States as a white nation and that people of color were of no equal nor did they belong in the same league as a white man. Robinson knew the backlash he would receive but had decided to go forward anyway in hopes of being the first step in the long road to integration into the MLB. “We're a species that is capable of almost dumbfounding kindness. We nurse one another, romance one another, weep for one another” (Kluger, 2007). Yet it amazes me to look back and to see just how inhumane people were to one another and it further makes me commend those who were brave enough to put their chins out there and to make a true difference with change. With Robinson, and so many others pushing for equality, there was a lack of citizenship in the United States as there were those who were trying to prevent this movement. “Good citizenship is no more a purely cognitive matter than is morality, and therefore it is necessary to give children more than skills and method. They must be made to care, feel, and identify in certain ways” (Oldenquist, 2023). During this time, these children were being taught the norms and standards of the times which is that black and white did not mix, yet Jackie Robinson did not let that stop him in his pursuit to break the color barrier in the MLB. When it comes to moral change in sports, one cannot help to think about Jackie Robinson, as he started a movement that has now shaped not only baseball but all professional sports in the United States. There are athletes of all races, religions, and creeds within these leagues, and without change and the courage of Robinson as well as these other heroes, who knows if equality would have ever been earned? Jackie Robinson is celebrated every single year on April 15 in the MLB, celebrating his accomplishments while all players wear his number 42 which is retired leaguewide. Photo:
