Imagine you are a therapist living in the not-so-distant future. A moral bio enhancement pill
called Moralzac is currently in clinical trials to obtain FDA approval. You have already read
about moral bio enhancement in peer-reviewed journals and are worried about the ethical
implications of this pill.
If this pill were to be approved by the FDA, would you prescribe it to a patient? Why or why
not?
Hello class,
Moral bio enhancement is defined as the use of biomedical technology to morally
improve individuals
(Budić et al., 2021). If I were a therapist and this drug was FDA approved, I
would not prescribe this to my patients. There are many ethical concerns aligned with a pill that
would change one’s moral compass. Some of the reasons I would not prescribe this medication is
it would take away a person’s freedom of choice. Using this drug could be seen as a form of
coercion if required to take them in order to conform to a particular moral standard which in my
opinion would infringe on a person’s personal autonomy. This could undermine cultural and
moral diversity as diverse cultures and individuals have diverse moral values. This medication
could also alter a person’s moral compass and the consequences of it are unforeseen and it could
lead to moral dilemmas when involving different individuals with different drugs for
enhancement. This could also be a risk when trying to alter brain function though it is uncertain
and has not been proven as of yet. The use of MBE could require close monitoring or
surveillance which could infringe on the client’s privacy and go against ethical standards.
Another reason I would not prescribe this medicine to my clients is the potential harm in ethical
decision-making meaning if the clients are unable to make decisions on their own it can raise
questions about the authenticity and moral value of their choices. Lastly, I believe if society
encourages moral enhancement, this will cause a shift in responsibility for ethical behavior from
individuals to outside factors such as drugs, this will possibly strip individuals of moral
accountability.
