Week 3 Demonstration of Discourse For your initial post, describe an emergency situation (imagined or actual) in which affected people are likely to confront one or more ethical dilemmas as a direct result. Considering just the material from this chapter and using cited language from this chapter, imaginatively or intuitively analyze how the affected people might respond ethically. You could use phrases like: “A physician faced with the prospect of prolonged electrical outage, whose patient requires a heart pump, might think in terms of universal ethical egoism and…. In your responses to classmates, suggest how other aspects of egoism might apply to their scenario. Complete a minimum of 4 posts. In the fire service, we are faced with extraordinary situations more often than the average person. It is the inherent duty of a first responder to be exposed to certain risks to help those in need. It is an ethical dilemma, however, to determine when risk outweighs a potential positive outcome. One emergency situation that a Firefighter may likely face is when to continue search efforts versus when to evacuate. Procedures call for the first arriving ladder crew at a fire to conduct a primary search. Fire scenes can deteriorate quickly, leaving limited time to conduct this search. I have seen Firefighters face immense heat, zero visibility, intense smoke, and uncertain structural stability. It is in these situations when a decision must be made to either continue search efforts or evacuate the area. Some individuals may subscribe to personal ethical egoism, which mandates that people act in their own self-interest and everything else is irrelevant (Hinman, 2013). This person may decide to drop what they are doing and evacuate. Neither the individual in need of rescue, other crewmembers, nor the incident commander’s orders will impact this decision. The decision will be made for the best interest of the firefighter and everything else in this emergency situation is irrelevant. References Hinman, L. M. (2013).
