King Essay 1. Considering Meaning: What does King mean when he says that “we’re all mentally ill” (paragraph 1)? Is this a profound statement? Why or why not?- He's saying that each of us has distinctively unique tendencies. He's attempting to make the point that everyone has a little craziness, even if it doesn't always come out as clearly as if you were crazy. He claims we occasionally classify people even though we tend to act and think similarly. He tries to demonstrate that our thoughts are merely mental cravings for what may be correct or incorrect. 2. Identifying Writing Strategies: How does King use analysis and breaking a complex topic into parts to support his argument?- Stephen King asks, "Why do we go to the movies?" He then responds to it with logical arguments. King illustrates his points with the help of well-known actors and films, such as Fred Jackson in "Die, Monster, Die" and the murders in "Jack the Ripper" and "Cleveland tours murder." He bases his argument on these well-known films. 3. Reading Critically: Why do you think King uses the inclusive pronoun “we” so frequently throughout his essay? What effect does the use of this pronoun have on your response to his argument? Stephen King employs the pronoun "we" because he offers himself as an example of someone interested in what other people do, why they do it, and where the notion originated. This pronoun draws you away from the opposition and encourages you to
listen to his point of view because he sees himself as one of us—astonished and needing explanations. 4. Expanding Vocabulary: Define innately (paragraph 4). What does King mean when he says horror movies are “innately conservative”? Does he contradict himself when he says they are also “reactionary, anarchistic, and revolutionary” (paragraph 11)? Why or why not?- Stephen King attempts to convey that a part of people that cannot be expressed without mapping out is shown in horror films. He nearly suggests that you should be shocked or disgusted. They are revolutionary in the sense that they occasionally alter the way we perceive the world or the way we think. Stephen King does not contradict himself since horror films frequently drive us to rethink reality by going outside our comfort zones and provoking us to act in ways we would generally resist but never do. 5. Making Connections: In “Black Men and Public Space” (pp. 419-22), Brent Staples writes about a reflective fear and anxiety he arouses in people when walking at night. How might King’s view of human nature help explain the reactions to Staples?- In the article "Just Walk on By," Brent Staples significantly succeeds in illuminating the present unfavorable perception of black males in America and the persistence of racism in modern society. He tells a personal narrative about his journey toward realizing the impact his outward look may have on his surroundings.
