1 Biblical Understanding of Communication for Ministry Elias Ruiz College of Theology: Grand Canyon University MIN—430: Ministerial Communication Dr. David Yauk Sept 01, 2023
2 Biblical Understanding of Communication for Ministry Communication is a simple idea that is deep-seated in every phase of life and, at the same time, is frequently and quickly a confused and challenging facet of human interactions. In our textbook, Authentic Communication, the authors say communication is “A systemic process in which individuals interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meanings” (Muehlhoff & Lewis, 2010, p. 38). In ministry, the power of communication can affect the ministry’s competence as it shows that communication is made stronger spiritually as we connect the scripture as we communicate. When something is communicated, it can be understood positively or negatively. For Instance, in Proverbs 18:21, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits" (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version, 2001/2016). James explains, "The tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell" (James 3:6), (Grand Canyon University, 2021). Let us assess how communication can be impacted by two ministerial contexts: youth ministry and staff meetings. Also, encompasses the impact communication has on a church's preaching and teaching ministry. There is a deep hunger in our youth for love, truth, meaning, belonging, and for a purpose the culture cannot satisfy. With the right communication, the youth can be adjusted to understand Christ and what they are to Him and communicate how God used Timothy, a teenager, to Pastor a church. 1 Timothy 4:12 says, “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.” Youth ministry can potentially modify students' lives, or it can do permanent damage, sometimes even pushing them
3 further away. “Ministry leaders must improve their communication skills to communicate God’s truth to others in various settings successfully.” (GCU, 2021). Church should avoid hurting the students' relationship with Christ while they can be reached. This is where communication should start, not just informing them; we should try to understand how to change the message's perception. Most youth are between Middle and High School and the beginning stages of adolescence. This is the time of psychological and physical development, and they will seek identity and establish new personalities together with character traits, which they will keep for their entire lives (Grison et al., 2019). The youth look towards the leaders for guidance and support. By holding to the Scriptures, the Christian leader will recognize the importance of maintaining healthy interaction within the team. (Momeny & Gourgues 2020 pg. 288). At times, youth misunderstand a Pastor’s sermon and have more questions or separate from the Pastor's Relations, and a more concise and available mode of communication should be available. There is power in Ministerial Communication with the Staff in church. The Deacons, church trustees, and even the church secretaries should see their jobs as a ministry and be spiritually ready to work with the youth. It will result in reaching these young people before they go astray or look for answers from the wrong crowd. Regarding ministry, the youth are at a place with Jesus; no matter how long they have been in church, they are looking for their place, individually and not like anyone else, not even the church’s, but unique to them, (Powell et al., (2011). If the church has a relationship and great communication with the staff, it will strengthen them. Our churches must grow to leadership capacity and should also establish spiritual and missional leadership. Words have a significant impact on those around us. Church leaders, including church staff, are being watched, listened to, and analyzed through

4 communication. Every person in the ministry is on display. “How effective a communicator are you?” (GCU, 2021). The most significant impact communication will have on a church comes from the Preacher. This is where ‘secular’ communication skills will be more significant—a strong understanding and interpretation of the scripture's stance on communicating its powerful message. The Old Testament proves we are communication creatures, as the prophets were considered the communicators of the Old Testament. In Exodus 20:22, God charged Moses to proclaim His law. 1 Samuel 3:19, concerning Samuel, "The Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground" (ESV). (Merida, T. 2009 pg. 14). Moses and Samuel were the first communicators mentioned in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Paul writes to his young students, Timothy and Titus, instructing them on preaching and teaching. In 2 Timothy, Paul says that as pastors, they should always be ready to teach, exhort, and encourage their listeners (2 Timothy 4:1-5). He says, “All Scripture is inspired by God, and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness” (3:16), so teach preach the ‘whole thing.’ This charge is handed down to all preachers and Pastors. Communication skills impact this charge, whether rebuking and correcting our congregants or preaching our messages on Sunday morning. Paul says, "I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. I was commissioned as a teacher, apostle, and preacher because of this gospel” (1 Timothy 2:7), (Fitzmyer, 2004). It is essential to understand the usefulness of communicating the scriptures to the church with proper Biblical understanding; as Paul says, the church should learn how to communicate through the ministry of Jesus and the Old Testament prophet
