1 Interview: Importance of Communication in Ministry Elias Ruiz College of Theology: Grand Canyon University Min—430: Ministerial Communication Dr. David Yauk September 10, 2023
2 This is an interview with Dr. David A. Watson, Pastor of Calvary Chapel in Staten Island, NY, for 33 years. He is the Founder and President of the New York Institute for Biblical Studies, the Protestant Chaplain at a local Nursing Home, and a Clergy Liaison for the local Police. Dr. Watson holds a Degree from World of Life in Schroon Lake, New York, a Bachelor of Science in Pastoral Counseling from Liberty University, a Master of Divinity Degree from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from New York Theological Seminary in NYC. Though younger than I, Dr. Watson has been my mentor and Advisor for many years. A Pentecostal Minister that preaches the Word of God and is beyond reproach. He is sought after by Pastors and church and community leaders for his unselfish dedication to the community. He is my friend; we share experiences and rely on each other’s confidentialities. Every Pastor and person in Ministry should have a ‘go-to’ person for counseling and Spiritual help; he is mine, which is why I selected him. 1. What do you know now about being a leader in the church that you did not realize when you first began? What difference could it have made in your ministry if you had known these things from the start of your ministry? Leadership is not a position. It is influencing people and leading them in the right direction. People follow a leader because they feel loved and spiritually nourished and that he loves God above all things. I should have dedicated more time to building trust and earning the trust of the community as well as the church. Disagree. I think a Pastor does hold a crucial leadership position within the church. He has been assigned to the church for spiritual guidance and pastoral care. The church is also the pastor’s primary concern and obligation; community and outside sources should
3 be last. I would assume the role of a Shepherd and be totally in control and protective of my sheep. I want the sheep to look for comfort with me when trouble arises. 2. What do you find creates the greatest conflicts within the church? The most significant cause of conflict within churches is probably the failure of leadership to communicate clearly, allowing the fallen nature of man to enter and provoke conflict. The root cause is that everyone wants it their way, and leaders fail to set a clear agenda. This way, the people won’t bring their agenda and work for a cause that is greater than theirs, the expansion of the Kingdom of God. I agree that communication is the main course of conflicts that arise within the church. The Pastor should always be the most excellent communicator, leader, and role model. I can see myself developing more excellent communication skills with my staff, leaders, and church. 3. When conflict arises, what is your approach to handling the situation as a leader? Conflicts will arise, and the leaders should promptly address the issue. In humility, listen to each side of the conflict and lovingly instruct them regarding the situation causing the strife. The individuals might have to be disciplined respectfully and lovingly, as prescribed by the scriptures. I agree with most of this response. A church conflict will never resolve itself. The Pastor and his staff are to handle it promptly and only involve the church if it affects the whole church. Do not incorporate outside parties unless it is necessary. Use good judgement and let the Word be your guide. I have been involved in church conflicts, and

4 the Pastor has always been the leader and spokesperson. That’s how I would relate to this situation. 4. How important is it for a church to have a mission and vision statement? Who do you think should be a part of developing such ideas: The pastor? The staff? The congregation? Some combination of these? Biblically based and formed Mission and Vision Statements for a Church are essential. It permits the church members to have a focal point as a guide to making certain decisions and doing ministry. The pastor should not make this mission statement, but the church board, deacons, elders, and the congregation should compose it. The church will be guided by this mission and vision statement and will strictly implement it. I agree with this answer. Most churches I have been involved in already had a mission/Vision statement. I have been an AOG Minister, and they also work with Pastors and churches when they are putting a mission statement together. An Attorney should also revise it for legalities. In conclusion, as I re-read the questions and answers, it is a clear lesson learned. The role of a Pastor is multifaceted, and a Pastor should never stop learning. I knew that a Pastor has to be able to delegate responsibilities within the church. He can never be able to solve all the problems that arise. The best lesson learned from this interview is that communication is the most crucial aspect of a ministry. From sermons to website content to announcements to contact cards and more, Pastor communication is of utmost importance in helping the church grow and maintain a solid relationship with the body of Christ.
