Argument The argument that I would like to address is that NCAA student-athletes should be financially compensated by their schools. Currently, the schools do not compensate these athletes financially but only with scholarships that are not given to everyone, and even if the athlete receives the scholarship that does not mean that this scholarship will cover 100% of the tuition. This topic is one of the most polarizing topics in the current sports world. Some people, mostly the schools, argue that scholarships are enough for athletes. However, the athletes and individuals that are involved with these collegiate sports, and are not working for universities or the NCAA, saying that schools make enough money to compensate these athletes. This topic is debatable as multiple perspectives can be seen with this discussion: athletes’ perspective, NCAA/school perspective, and the bystander’s perspective. These perspectives will all debate different things as they have different motives. The athletes will be pro-compensation, the NCAA/schools will be most likely against it and the bystanders will be the wild card. However, after reading this paper and seeing the data and evidence, the bystanders and the NCCA/schools should feel persuaded to compensate these athletes. Challenges I will specifically try to talk to the student-athletes to give them the courage to fight this problem, and at the same time, I would like to prove and find enough evidence to persuade college athletic directors to pay more attention to this problem. I am worried that I may not find enough information because the NCAA as a big corporation might want to cover evidence that would confirm or validate the argument that student-athletes should be compensated. As we can see this type of behavior in other cases, big corporations try to cover evidence that could make them look bad and that could affect their revenues. The student-athletes should be on board with
my argument as they will only benefit from my findings. The biggest challenge for me will be persuading the athletic directors, as they might not be as lean toward my argument and evidence. Goals I hope that this essay could be possibly used in the professional world to help athletes achieve their goals and help them with their financial compensation. Also, I wish that this essay will persuade the athletic directors and help them realize that the schools and the leagues are benefiting financially due to the participation of these student-athletes. This paper will prove and suggest that it is only fair that these schools and organizations give something back to these student-athletes, which is the main goal that I would want to achieve with this essay. Key Points The first point that I would like to address in this paper is the NCAA’s annual revenue. This will show the financial gain that the athletes are giving to the organization. The second point I want to address is the schools’ annual revenues, including the funds that are used for renovations and building of the sports facilities, as well as the salaries of some of the coaching staff, etc. The third point I want to show is how many student-athletes make go on to play professional sports after college, how many athletes end their careers during college, how much free time they have on average, and how much money they have on average. This information will allow me to show how much free time these athletes don’t have, which will help me argue my case of how hard it is for them to get jobs and make money for themselves. This will be one of the main arguments on why they should get compensated because most of these athletes are forced to be dependent on their parents, legal guardians, or others.
Sources The first article that will be helpful in this essay, is called NCAA generates record US$1.16bn revenue for 2021 by Rory Jones https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/ncaa- finances-2021-revenue-march-madness-college-sports/?zephr_sso_ott=MU311e . This article talks about NCAA revenues in 2021 and provides data such as this year NCAA recorded the highest revenue in its history. This article also talks about future TV deals that should increase overall revenue by a couple of hundred millions dollars. The second article is called College Sports Cartel Crashes as Athletes Prepare to Cash in on “Name, Image, and Likeness” https://www.educationnext.org/college-sports-cartel-crashes-athletes-prepare-cash-in-name- image-likeness/ . The second article talks about the current situation in the NCAA. It says that the 65 biggest schools pocketed around $8.5 billion in 2016 (Perloff, 2021). This article also says that the NCAA’s lawyers have been arguing that if the student-athletes make money that automatically makes them professionals and therefore, they should lose their scholarships. The highest-ranked quarterbacks talked about how hard it is to balance all the work in school and on the field and that time management is crucial. This article also discusses that it would be illegal if any other industry in the US would work the same way as the NCAA. Integration of Evidence I will try to show as many statistics as possible to show that everybody except the student-athletes makes money from collegiate sports. This will include graphs, charts, and hard numbers to visually show the audience the discrepancies between student-athlete income and other income that is made off of these sports. I will also try and conduct some interviews with student-athletes and get their opinions on the matter. I will keep my personal opinion aside and I will implement the critical data backed up by hard evidence. By showing all this evidence I want

to show that if the athletes stick together there is a chance that they will be fairly compensated soon.
