Week One (by August 28) What I hope to get out of this class is a better understanding of how to make ethical decisions based on the situation I am in. I am studying to become a physician and an important part of that is to be ethical and unbiased. Through what I’ve learned from the first week of class I would say that learning ethics in a formal setting will be very beneficial since there is constant feedback from my peers and teacher. As opposed to having been taught ethics informally where there is typically biased opinions. What are you hoping to get out of this class? Do you think studying ethics in a formal setting can make someone more ethical?
Week Two (by August 4) I usually make ethical decisions based on my personal intuition on what I think is right and wrong morally. It is influenced by my love for my family as well as my determination to succeed. Utilitarianism does not capture my normal moral reasoning since I am biased towards my family and loved ones. Utilitarianism is all about being unbiased and putting the needs of other before yours to promote over well-being. How do you normally make ethical decisions? Do you find that Utilitarianism captures your normal moral reasoning?

Week Three (by September 11) Deontology focused more on simply right and wrong, right actions are ones we ought to do and wrong ones are actions we ought not to do (morally required and morally forbidden to do). A Kantian would be against the impartial aspect of a Utilitarian because it may ask individuals to value all person's well-being the same, even if that person has views completely contrast to your well-being. I prefer deontology simply because it gives more free-will to the followers. I don’t believe in impartiality in every situation so I wouldn’t find well-being whilst following utilitarian ethics. Did you find that Deontology captured some of the issues with Utilitarianism? Do you find yourself preferring one theory over the other?
Week Four (by September 18) The ethical systems discussed in feminist ethics we agreeable in some ways. I agree that there are some things that are falsely tied to feminist ethics such as the claim of it only benefiting women and that they should substitute female values for masculine values. I also agree that feminist ethics can never begin by assuming that women and men are similarly situated. Feminist ethics leveled some critiques at the ethical systems we studied in weeks 1-3. Did you agree with any? Disagree?
Week Five (by September 25) I believe everyone has an intersectional identity, everyone (or mostly everyone) has picked up parts of other cultures and races which is what makes them who they are today. Having an intersectional identity changes how we interact with the world or how the world affects us. Intersectionality can help us fit in during these times, but they can also separate us. Do you have an intersectional identity? How do you think having or not having an intersectional identity affects how you approach the world, or how the world affects you?

Week Six (by October 2) I felt confident on the midterm and even more on the open response section. The multiple choice was a little challenging because all the question seemed to be versions of the right answer. To prepare for the next exam I will go over my notes and narrow in on the key point she talks over in class. I wish I did this before last test since I only went over the “but if” argument. How do you feel you did on the midterm exam? Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? Are there any changes you’ll make when you begin studying for the final?
Week Seven (by October 9) I found our first official applied ethics topic to be interesting. I believe that the material of utilitarianism that we went over in the beginning of the year was helpful in breaking down the ticking bomb torture argument. This is because it went over putting the well-being of others over one and in the situation, you are asked to decrease one's well-being in order to promote that of a larger group. We’ve finished our first official applied ethics topic. How did you find it? Do you think that the material we went over in the beginning of the course (the ethical theories) was helpful in analyzing?
Week Eight (by October 16) I have thought about the gendered division a lot before this chapter because I live in a house of all women and have been raised around them for my whole life. I’ve heard from my older relatives about gender roles and how men should be the providers and defenders while women should be the caretakers. My household consisted of women who didn’t let the roles define how we lived, and I was taught to not adhere to the role's society placed. Everyone in the house did every role although there were times where I would take on the traditional role of the man and take out the trash or do some handywork, it was out of respect for my mom or grandmother that I would do it. Is the gendered division of labor anything you had thought about before this week? What is the division of labor like in your household?

Week Nine (by October 23) I am pro-choice and believe that we have no right to tell someone what to do with their bodies. I haven’t really changed my opinion on the topic, but I did open my mind to the other side of the argument since it is mostly tied to religious beliefs. This topic likely brought up some strong feelings. Did you find that the emotional and political atmosphere surrounding abortion changed how you philosophically analyzed the subject?
Week Ten (by October 30) My favorite part of this course was when we went over the ethics on torture. I liked this topic because I wanted to know whether my classmates supported it in a specific situation or if they denounced it either way. I wouldn’t change a thing about this class, the course is interesting, and the professor keeps everyone engaged and she also truly cares for her students. What has been your favorite part of the course so far? Is there anything you would change about the course if you were going to take it again?
Week Eleven (by November 6) From what I can recall on the spot, I don’t believe I have ever participated in civil disobedience. I do however support it to an extent, this is because most civil disobedience I hear about is for the greater good. Protests for inequality and demanding justice are good for society because it allows us to intact our free will. If given the opportunity I would most likely participate in civil disobedience if it meant I would be helping other by doing so, I don’t support however using the cover of civil disobedience as an ulterior motive for another agenda. Have you ever engaged in civil disobedience? Do the pieces we’ve read on the subject in this class change how you would engage or if you would engage in civil disobedience?

Week Twelve (by November 13) The philosophy I expected is exactly what I got. I assumed we were going to go over tough ethical decisions and theories, but I did not expect the topic to be what they were. I'm not say that as a bad thing, I thoroughly enjoyed the topic we went over and enjoyed my classmates and loved hearing their opinions on said topics, but the torture and abortion ethics were ones that caught me off guard. Once again, I enjoyed these topics and the different way my classmates approached the questions in class was great, they were just topics I didn’t expect. We’ve read a lot of philosophy at this point in the semester! Is it about what you were expecting from the course when we started? What has been the most surprising?
Final Entry The part of the final that I'm most worried about is the Delmas and Watson readings. I only say this because I missed most of those classes due to my transportation being a little harder to get so I didn’t really get to hear the professor's key point or my classmate's discussions about them. My opinion has changed very little, but this class has opened my mind up a little more about topics I had a firm stand on. Such as feminist ethics, I completely thought feminist meant only for women but now my opinion/ facts have changed. Issues such as abortion, I still believe in the choice of the individual but now I can see why someone wouldn’t, even if I don’t agree. This is the last entry! The entire journal is due Sunday, November 27 at 11:59pm. What part of the final are you most worried about? Have you experienced any changes in opinion over the course of the semester? If not, why do you think you haven’t? If so, what opinion changed?
Woo hoo! It s over! Deadline to Upload: Sunday, November 27 by 11:59 PM After you have completed the Final Entry: 1. Save your PowerPoint. The PowerPoint file should be titled Journal_StudentID. Do not include your name either in your PowerPoint or in the file name. 2. Submit this PowerPoint file to the Journal Assignment in iCollege for review.
