Response: We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.
•
Explanation of Key Events and Scriptures
Demonstrate your comprehension of fundamental truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and your ability to use the scriptures to teach them. Be sure to include specific scripture references, focusing especially on restoration scriptures (Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price). Scenario: Imagine you have been asked by a family member or friend to share what you believe about the truths and events you studied this week. Share in your own words several insights as though you are really trying to teach someone. Include at least three scripture references to support the truths you teach (you may reference them, but there is no need to quote them). Share your testimony as you would when teaching someone. Your response will be evaluated by the following criteria:
•
200–300 words in length (please include your word count at the bottom of the section).
•
Include at least 3 references.
Response: When I first read this week's article of faith, it had a strong impact on me. It demonstrates that everyone should be held accountable for their misdeeds rather than Adam's sin. Despite this, Moses 6:50 was the
first verse I came across this week that helped me understand the idea more fully. This short, one-sentence scripture makes it clear that every person on this planet has to repent. It tells us that God has affirmed that we shall all confess to "our fathers." We understand that we will be held accountable for even our misdeeds and that we owe a great deal of remorse for them. This verse underlines that we should be tried for our offenses rather than Adam's sins, as the Article of Faith demonstrates. 2 Nephi 2:25 was the second verse I found to be especially interesting this week. This section is a brief one-paragraph chapter that is very important. Adam "falling for those that might be," it says. When you hear the phrase "Adam's transgression," the word's inherent connotations lead you to conclude that Adam was a sinner. Yet, this scripture informs you that man's downfall was necessary for the Plan of Salvation to happen. We are God's children, with the ability to be "partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4). Therefore, if we maintain our vows and the Atonement, we can become like our Heavenly Father. Being like Him entails adopting His personality and heavenly essence. There are additional attributes associated with this divine nature that we aspire to and strive for.

Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your response.

The world problem/issue I chose this week is: Materialism
Response: It is easy to grow sidetracked and resentful when we get so focused on the material things in life. The current materialistic preoccupation has to be owning the latest Apple or Samsung smartphone. However, in actuality, this is unimportant. What matters is what we bring with us to heaven, our knowledge, and our comprehension of the gospel. If we shift our attention to righteousness, our lives will be wonderfully fortunate. Temptation and envy might arise when our concentration is not where it should be. We read a lot in the scriptures about how our primary goal in life should be our Heavenly Father and His message. Worldly problems
will start to fade away if we do this. Another instance of this in my life is when I resolved to read my scriptures every day. My life and the relationships I had with others were greatly benefited as I did this. In addition, I was more joyful than I had been in a long time. Now when I miss a day of reading, I get upset and am less aware of the Lord's gentle mercies. The fact that consumerism can be addictive is another thing that I have learned about it. It is just as awful as it seems. We stop taking care of the little things because we are preoccupied with more significant issues. Serving others, reading our scriptures, going to church, going to the temple, and so much more
are examples. Materialism is a trait that Satan would like us to have, but we must remain strong and do what we know we are called to do.
