Critical thinking skills often prove to be a unique and challenging set of skills to assess. For example, consider assessing—formatively or summative—critical thinking skills in a whole class discussion based on quality questioning. Bear in mind that most people go through 5 stages of thinking (Walsh & Sattes, 2011, p. 62), in this order, after a question is asked: 1. Attend to the question. 2. Bring the question to working memory and decode. 3. Search long-term memory for relevant knowledge. 4. Bring the relevant knowledge to working memory and form a response. 5. Answer the question aloud. Explain how you would assess students' critical thinking in a class discussion based on quality questioning. What are your first considerations? Second? What follow-up strategies would you use to further students’ critical thinking in this environment? How do these strategies help to further critical thinking? The questioning is an assessment that is teacher-led, and it's usually formative to assess student’s understanding of the lesson taught or about to be taught. This helps teachers plan and select the teaching practices to move students to where they need to go. Effective questioning is where it's meaningful and understandable to students in learning, they challenge them. “Questioning is the only type of assessment that can operate “continuously during the course of teaching and learning to provide teachers and students with feedback” (Heritage, 2010, p. 10). I like to use probing questions, to help me with clarity of students understanding. They are quick assessments. The questions are discussions for the whole class, meaning ask questions to all groups of students, even the ones who are struggling. The questions must be open-ended and accept a variety of responses. These strategies help the student to feel safe to answer and do not intimidate them with feelings about correct or not correct answers through the discussion. Students are given space to open to their curiosity to learn, many times I personally find Aa-HA moment with questions. Review the College’s Conceptual Framework . How do this topic link to the College’s Conceptual Framework and the framework’s philosophical relationship to effective teacher preparation? The College’s Conceptual Framework and the framework’s philosophical relationship to effective teacher preparation by encouraging discussions and learning different contribution traits and questioning skills in discussions.
