Problem-solving is an important skill for teachers; it's difficult to imagine education without this asset! Still, we do face obstacles. Consider the factors you see as roadblocks to teaching critical thinking in your classroom and content area.
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
What are the roadblocks to teaching critical thinking in your classroom and content area? Can these roadblocks be cleared? If so, how, and by whom? If not, why not?
I teach elementary school level students, where teaching student step by step process takes much of the time. We follow the workshop model, in which the process of I DO, YOU DO and We DO take the time, where teaching critical thinking always takes a back seat. The main area is managing the time in the classroom to enhance learning with critical thinking skills. Yes, the classroom teacher can clear it with better classroom management and break work into parts or chunks. According to Bellanca, “critical thinking skills start with analyzing the content, spending time to understand and obtain clarity to the material being analyzed”.
Some educators argue that standards and critical thinking instruction can’t or don’t coexist peacefully, and that content instruction doesn’t have room for “more” (e.g., critical thinking strategies, quality questioning). Argue against this assertion.
Standards and critical thinking can co-exist peacefully, and content instruction have room for more, by designing lesson plan along the time scale of the classroom. When materials are planned and aligned with time each activity is worked into little chunks giving students time to explore, learn, and imply the content and critical thinking can work together.
