Explanation of Key Events and
Scriptures
Demonstrate your comprehension of fundamental truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and your ability to use the scriptures to teach them. Be sure to include specific scripture references from the assigned readings
Scenario: Imagine you have been asked by a family member or friend to share what you believe about the truths and events you studied this week. Share in your own words several
insights as though you are really trying to teach someone. Include at least three scripture references to support the truths you teach (you may reference them, but there is no need to quote them). Share your testimony as you would when teaching someone. Your response will be evaluated by the following criteria:
1.
200–300 words in length
(please include your word count at the bottom of the section).
2.
Include at least 3 scripture references
.
Response: The first scripture that helped me to better understand the article of faith this week was 2 Peter 1:1-12. As
we know, the 13
th
article of faith lays out all the things that we should seek after as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These verses helped me because in here we are promised many precious things if we are obedient and seek these things. It really gives me that reminder of the blessings I have received when I have done good things. The second scripture that helped me this week was Doctrine and Covenants 11:12-14. These verses
inspired me because it gave me the reminder that the Holy Ghost will lead me to all the great and precious things mentioned in this article of faith. It helped me to realize that I need to focus more on the influence of the spirit throughout each day. The last scripture that inspired me in my studies was Doctrine and Covenants 93:40-50. This stuck out to me because it mentions the importance of the family in encouraging and helping each other do what is right and learn the gospel. It mentions the duty of a parent to make sure that they raise a child with this knowledge of the gospel and to lead them to do what is right.
Word Count:221 4. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences
of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about
the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your response.
5.
The world problem/issue I chose this week is:
Energy/Environmental Issues
Response: I chose to focus on the topic of energy/environmental issues this week because I feel that it is something
that we don't focus on or care about much as citizens. What was interesting to think about and study up on is how
the gospel very much ties in to our duty as people here on an Earth that was created by God and Jesus Christ. When
we have that knowledge in our minds that this Earth really is a sacred thing, it changes our mindset on how we treat
it. We know that Heavenly Father created the Earth in a very miraculous and marvelous way so that we can come and enjoys it blessings and live happily and healthy. Over time, even in my short life, I have seen some effects of what treated our land poorly does. I served my mission in the beautiful islands of Hawaii and if you have met anyone from there you know that land Is very sacred and important to them. They treat it with much respect and will stand up for something if they believe that is wrong or unjust. This is where I learned how to respect the natural things that
God has given us. I think the 13th article of faith is very interesting to tie into this issue because it mentions that Christ will dwell and reign on the Earth and that it will be renewed. If this doesn't show us the significance of this Earth than I'm not sure what will. To know that Christ will personally rule upon this Earth someday reminds me how blessed we are to live here now. It shows me that we need to respect this land and treat it like the sacred gift it is. This means disposing of things the way that we are supposed to and making sure we don't release toxins into the air.
