Philosophy of Special Education Emily Witherspoon Grand Canyon University: SPD 501 Prof. Kimber O. Underdown October 18, 2023
Philosophy of Special Education A teaching philosophy is an educator’s guiding principle. It is their beliefs and values about teaching and learning. Teaching philosophies are unique and different between educators. In this paper, I will address my beliefs on the purpose of education, how I plan to meet the needs of my special needs students through standards, how ethical frameworks will guide my teaching practices, the resources I will use to deepen my understanding of my students’ differences, and how I will professionally continue my lifelong learning. Purpose of Education I believe the purpose of education is to create educated, socialized individuals. The Big Debate (2021) elaborates that the purpose of education is to prepare the student for the future by gaining knowledge and developing individual skills. Schools provide a community feeling and prepare students to become community citizens. Schools provide a feeling of belonging, teach discipline, and create relationships (The Big Debate, 2021). Those are lifelong skills that children will carry with them throughout their lives and they may not receive that at home. We want children to have a profound understanding of the world they live in and with the tools given to them through education, have a sense of how they can thrive as members of society (The Big Debate, 2021). Personal Vision I believe that the needs of students with special needs can be met by modifying and accommodating teaching standards, to create individualized learning. Modifying changes what the student is learning and accommodations change how the student
learns ( McGlynn & Kelly, 2019). I believe that to effectively create these modifications and accommodations, communication between general teachers, special education teachers, and families is crucial. An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) ensures that modifications and accommodations are in place for special needs students. Using informal assessments and standardized tests gives educators the necessary information to create modifications and accommodations (Rotter, 2014). Whether the student is in any classroom, it creates a common ground “As a process, the IEP requires collaboration between parents, teachers, administrators, and the multi- disciplinary team” (Rotter, 2014). Student achievement and participation with teaching standards can be achieved by effectively implementing the IEP. Ethical Frameworks and Professional Practices The Model Code of Ethics for Educators Principle 3 is the educator's responsibility to the students. This responsibility promotes educators keeping the well- being of students in mind, being respectful, and setting appropriate boundaries with students ( National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, 2023). It is important that the learning of students remains at the forefront. All students need to be treated fairly and relationships need to be appropriate ( National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, 2023). The Model Code of Ethics Principle 1 is the educator's responsibility to the profession. This promotes educators understanding and enforcing procedures, policies, and laws applicable to professional practice, even if they disagree ( National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, 2023). A professional educator should always have fidelity when it comes to professional responsibilities.

Resources It is crucial for educators to stay update to date on culture, ethnic, gender and learning differences. The world around us is ever-changing, and lucky for educators, there are resources available to inform and educate on these differences. I will use Northern Illinois University’s educator’s diversity, equity, and inclusion tool kit to further my background of cultural competency. It is so important to be inclusive to all students, no matter their cultural differences. UNESCO is a wonderful resource that I will use to deepen my understanding on gender eqaulity. I will use the Autisim and Learning Differences toolkit to contiue building my knowledge of learning differences. As educators we have an obligation to continue our education in order to enhance our teaching skills, and these resources will help me continue to do so. Learning Activities To enable my enduring adventure of learning, I would join the National Association of Special Education Teachers community. NASET helps members stay informed and up-to-date of current issues that are molding the field, affecting the lives of students, and influencing professional careers (The National Association of Special Education Teachers, 2018). This association offers a multitude of series and programs that meet the needs of special educators. The series and programs focus on different disorders, how to discipline in special education, behavior management, communication to parents, and more (The National Association of Special Education Teachers, 2018). They apper as lecture videos and powerpoints. It is vital for educators to continue their education and NASET is a great asset in doing so. The National Education Association is another community I plan to join. The NEA provides educators with tools and
resources to use in classrooms for the purpose of the students. The NEA is focuses on quality education for all students and is a great resource for educators (National Education Association, n.d.). Conclusion In conclusion the purpose of teaching is to foster learning for all students. How educators teach is based on philosophy. Regardless of my personal beliefs, I put the education of my students at the forefront. I am always looking to deepen my understanding and searching for new methods of teaching to meet the needs of my students. At the end of the day, the positive relationships and seeing gorwth is what keeps my wheels going.
