2 Developing an Argument for Change CM 220 Module 2 Competency Assessment Part I: Thesis Review the Module 2 reading on thesis statements and identifying the underlying assumption and common ground. You may also want to review the Writing Center’s Writing a Thesis Statement . What is your thesis statement (claim + reason)? The United States Soccer Federation should implement laws that regulate the youth level “pay-to-play” format, to give talents from different backgrounds equal opportunities. What is the underlying assumption (major premise) for your thesis? The underlying assumption or major premise is that the United States Soccer Federation should do act if it would help. What common ground do you anticipate that you will share with your audience? I anticipate my audience agreeing with me that youth level soccer in the United States is expensive. However, I do think most people believe that it just is an expensive sport and that there is not ways to provide equal opportunities. Part II: Problem- Overview Review the Module 1 reading on the rhetorical situation. What is your purpose? How would you describe the problem and what are examples that illustrate the problem? My purpose is to convince people that although youth soccer might be expensive, the United States Soccer Federation should act and demand clubs from around the country to offer equal opportunity for players from different backgrounds. To better understand this, we can take examples on how the European youth programs are designed. Clubs often take the approach of youth development as a priority rather than profit sharing, and still end up making profit. This is made by increasing the value and performances of their team, leading to more demand, better sponsorship deals, and increasing external sales. In contrast, to the United States, where kids playing from the ages 6-12 have dropped 4% from the years 2015-2019, England’s youth players from ages 6-12 have increased by 7%, mainly due to every kid being able to play, regardless to the family’s economic status (Herrin, 2019). Describe your My audience is the United States Soccer Federation. The pricing issue
3 audience. How does the issue affect different community stakeholders? Who would be underrepresented stakeholders? Who can implement your proposed solution? affects families with less economical resources, leaving talented players with no opportunities to showcase their talents. This youth players are usually underrepresented, as an study found that nearly 35% of all outdoor soccer players in America belong to the $100,000+ annual household income bracket, while only approximately 10% was under the $25,000 bracket (Herrin, 2019). The rules or regulations I propose are to protect the player, create a genuine environment where the player is the first priority, and to give equal opportunities to youth players, no matter their backgrounds. The solution can be implemented by the U.S Soccer Federation, but also clubs, teams, or academies alike. How would you describe your setting? What are key elements of the setting that affect the problem? The setting would be youth soccer teams or academies in America, specifically within North Florida. Key elements that might affect the problem are team expenses, household income, team resources, and more. Part III: The Appeals Review the “ Three Appeals of Argument ” podcast in Module 2 reading. Respond in full paragraphs for each of the appeals and include specific examples to illustrate how you will use those appeals. Reference at least one source that you can use to support your claims, and also be sure to identify a particular logical fallacy and how you will avoid it in the logos section. For more on fallacies, review How to Support an Argument and Avoid Logical Fallacies . How will you use the ethos appeal? How will you ensure your audience trusts you? Who might be stakeholders that may have reservations or negative results from the proposed solution? I will use ethos appeal as an appeal to credibility, showing both sides of the issue, demonstrating that the proposed solutions are for everyone’s factual benefit rather than a minority benefit. Thus, by understanding both sides of the issue, I can start to gaining the trust of the stakeholders. However, owners of youth teams, clubs, or academies may have reservations due to their unique needs. Some clubs have to spend more than others in order to maintain their fields, equipments, coaches, and others. How will you use the pathos appeal? What are ways you can connect with your audience? What might be specific examples that you could use to illustrate the As the audience or pathos are parents and children in America, I can connect with them by using real examples of opportunities that are only for the wealthy, when in other countries the sport is for everyone. An specific example I can use is how other federations around the world use distinctive methods, prioritizing player development and focusing profit from other venues like sponsorships, fundraising, merchandise sales, and others.

4 problem? How will you use the logos appeal? What evidence supports that this is the best solution? What research will you need to conduct? What is one source you have found that will help you support your claims? What are rival hypotheses you will need to address? In this persuasive paper, my logos appeal will be evidence that other methods have proven to be successful both financially and professionally, with countries such as Spain, Germany, France, and Argentina having success on the professional level while prioritizing revenue from other sources. I will conduct research to explore more how they fund their expenses and how they structure youth development compared to the United States. So far, I found multiple articles about youth soccer costs in America, but one that caugh my attention was from Youth Soccer Insider, which explains how in Europe, the federations pay for the fees of referees, and the city for the maintainance of the fields, having kids playing without paying a dollar. This can be a rival hypotheses I will need to address, that teams in the United States do not generate as much revenue as in Europe. The truth is that the this is only true when we speak about global power-horses, when in reality, most kids in Europe start in their community team, which in fact generate less revenue than the average American Academy (Guvener, 2023). What is a specific logical fallacy (like a hasty generalization) that you will need to avoid and how do you plan to avoid that fallacy? One logical fallacy I will need to avoid is the Straw Man, which oversimplifies an opponent’s viewpoint and then attacks the hollow argument (Logical Fallacies, 2022). I plan to avoid simplifying opposing viewpoints by discussing their points and acknowledge the benefits of the opposing argument, as well as acknowledging possible drawbacks of the presented solution.
