Define
Personal Philosophy of School Counseling Statement
o
Vision Statement:
I envision a future where I am successful in my role as a school counselor. Using my empathy and creativity to make a positive impact on my students, by offering them kindness and grace while delivering creative ideas when helping them make plans. I will dedicate myself to building a continuous rapport with not only my students but also the environment and community we’re based in and around with the hopes that my values will create a space for someone else to flourish.
o
Core Beliefs:
As a counselor, I believe that my student's well-being and education come first before all else. I believe that they deserve to feel like they're in a safe and supportive learning environment where they're valued and respected. As the counselor, I believe that it is my duty to address their social, emotional, and academic needs where I see fit. Encouraging them to take advantage of the freedoms they have to explore their social and emotional skills free of judgment. I believe that with my resources, it is for me to advocate for my students as much as I can, to help them succeed. Manage
School Counselor Competency Assessment Results and Reflection
o
Competency Assessment
: Completing the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies Assessment (American School Counselor Association, 2019), helped show me that to be a school counselor we must be well-versed and knowledgeable in many different aspects of this career. After completing the
assessment, I believe that I possess the mindset of a competent school counselor, however, I could also see where there is room for me to grow. Acknowledging that although I do present the necessary skills, the skills that I do have are still developing and evolving.
o
Strengths: After exploring The School Counselor Competency Assessment, it gave me a great idea of what my career as a school counselor will entail. Opening my eyes to things I was unaware of and giving me more information to take with me after reading the assessment. I think I did pretty well in the B-PF 8 component on school counseling, due to my current job being inpatient. There I am constantly advocating for my patients and in some ways, those guidelines are
very similar.
o
Weaknesses: However, this showed me that there is always room for improvement. Setting goals gives me a clearer picture of where I'm heading and how I might improve in the program. I do believe that I could be better versed in areas such as B-PF 9 and B-SS 1. Going through those sections, I noticed that what I was reading sounded along the lines of items I was not as familiar with. o

Summary of Lesson: Group or individual counseling sessions might benefit from the stimulating, beautiful, and thought-provoking social skills exercises found in The Social Skills Journal. In the area of social skills, the Social Skills Interactive Journal offers activities that match the ASCA Student Standards: Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success. To help reinforce social skills, the Social Skills Journal has 17 attractive and practical tasks. The interactive Social Skills Journal was developed to equip students with the social skills they'll need in day-to-day interactions.
o
Challenges of Implementation: The demographic I would like to work with is high school. Implementing this lesson plan at a high school level could be challenging because you have some students who may feel as though they don't need to do these kinds of lessons because of their maturity level or feel that the worksheets are childish.

School Counseling Through a Developmental Lens: Implications for Working with Adolescent Girls
o
I selected this article because I want to work with high school-level students. I know that my impact will stretch beyond a specific gender, however, I got in this field to be the example I wish I had growing up. This article offers insight into how to support adolescent girls’ social and emotional development, by providing
school counselors with an understanding of girls’ current experiences and developmental needs (Brookover et al., 2021).
o
The authors focused their research on the experiences of 11 girls in Generation Z. They further examined girls’ interactions with their high school counselors including whether these interactions supported their development (Brookover et
al., 2021). Five themes within the data that were highlighted showed how this generation of girls are expected to excel in both traditional and contemporary gender roles (Brookover et al., 2021).
o
In the article, the author presents a number of findings that are associated with the development of adolescent girls. From family and friends to the #MeToo Movement, to teachers and school counselors. A major supportive finding was that "the information provided by participants about their experiences with their
high school counselors. The participants appreciated when their school counselors showed unconditional positive regard and established trusting relationships. These results align with findings that positive relationships between school counselors and students help students navigate developmental challenges" (Brookover et al., 2021).
