Section 1: General Overview of Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism is a theory of morality that hold the premise that an action is right as long as it brings happiness and serves the greater good of society or a group. An action being moral or
immoral is determined by the consequences of the action. Once the end result is seen, one can then decide which is right for the majority. Although the consequences may not always be ethically correct. It will be for the benefit of all. Because of the legal policies and procedures that
come alongside building walls along the borders I agree with the idea for it aids in safety and security. Per Rich & Newton (2019), illegal immigration cases have been on the rise since the terrorist attack of 11-09-2011 (Rich & Newton, 2019). The unlawful entrance into the country is an example of rule utilitarianism shown in the article by Ritchie & Newton since I believe that according to the law of the United States, it is prohibited to cross the border without proper documentation which can be in the form of a passport or any other proof of identity. Ethical egoism can be present when someone helps an immigrant cross because he they feel is it rights although they are disobeying the laws by aiding illegal crossing borders. “The Center for Immigration Studies estimates that there were approximately 6.5 million undocumented Mexican immigrants residing in the US as of 2007 (Issit & Warhol, 2020)”. This has been a topic of great debate. However, when considering past events that have occurred such as 9/11 is it imperative to create boundaries as such to ensure the safety of the citizens of the United States.
Archuleta 2 Section 2: Bentham or Mill?
I will consider John Stuart Mill, whose belief resided in the rule of Utilitarianism because
it supports my thought on preventing illegal entry by immigrants with the presence of a border. Utilitarianism practice states that everyone must to follow the law designated by the authorities ethically. Often, many people argue that they disagree with some rules. It is my belief that rules, and regulations are set forth for a reason, the greater purpose to protect the citizens within the country. For example, there have been arguments about the laws regarding alcohol and tobacco sales, yet the ages are set forth to avoid younger aged people to consume either due to the addictive nature and the health concerns associated with both that can be life threatening. The importance of laws in society is making the significant reason for that law greater known. The application of Mill's view will depend entirely on the required documentation to pass the borders but not on creating an image to look good when surely, it is risking the lives of very many people. There will forever be debates among those concerned against the building of walls, but in the end, it is for the good of the whole nation. Therefore, the barrier prevents illegal entrance into the country, preventing harmful people or groups from entering the country that we
have fought so hard to build and to keep safe.
Section 3: Application of Bentham or Mill
Mill would assess the claim that there should be a wall between the U.S and Mexico by evaluating the situation based on its conformity with the United States constitution's regulations. Mill would address the rules and build the walls because he would rather prefer doing what is suitable for the nation and keeping all those included safe from any potential harm. The constitution requires that a person should provide proper documentation before being granted
Archuleta 3 entry into the United States. Even with the proper documentation in a world that is technology driven can allow for those with false documentation to potentially slip through the cracks. But to have these rules and regulations in place mitigates the possibility of those with ill intension entering and creating havoc among the nation we fought to become. This opinion may indeed spark debates, but the rules and regulations are set forth to prevent U.S citizens from a similar attack to that of September 11th, 2001 (Rich & Newton, 2019). Let us not forget that it took years to recover from these horrific attacks, it took years for the nation to rebuild itself and regather its strength, and even today the nation still suffers from the trauma endured from those attacks that occurred 20 years later. Despite changing rules or fighting to allow illegals in this makes us vulnerable to potential harm, lives can never be recovered once lost to terrorism. A large concern in the wall are the costs associated “7 billion had been spent to construct approximately 650 miles of fencing along the border (Sally & Bourassa, 2020).” Regardless of cost I believe that putting the wall up would be the right thing to
do, I believe that it is a right to live in the United States and that all those who reside here should feel a sense of safety while being here.
