Module 3 Distinguish between the non-personal and personal positions on abortion? What are the underlying rationales behind these positions? How does this relate to autonomy, the mind- body split, and ethical relativism? Non-personal position on abortion states that a fetus should not be associated with being a person. Therefore, it does not deserve the same respect as a human because the fetus cannot make its own decisions or communicate and function as a human being. On the other hand, personal positions on abortion the zygote deserves complete respect and protection even if it may not even reach the opportunity to make a rational thought. Following this further, these two positions relate to autonomy because it is solely up to the woman to decide what position she wants to take and up to her if she decides to go through with an abortion or not. In addition, the mind-body split related to these two positions because of my body, my choice. Therefore, the mind of a person decides what is right or wrong for itself. Lastly, ethical relativism is related to non-personal and personal positions because everyone’s beliefs and views are different and should not be judged. Review the Ethical and Religious Directives on Abortion. What are the theological and ethical arguments given against abortion in this document? Are there any cases in which abortion might be justified? After reading through the Ethical and Religious Directives on Abortion document I realized that the Ethical and Religious Directive teach human dignity and provide guidance on the moral issue of abortion. In general, Catholics believe that abortion is not allowed in any form and it is considered to be murder because it is ending a life. However, a person who has a “right to life” has to be conscious, have a relative thought process, and show characteristics that display a flourished quality of life. On the other hand, a fetus may not exhibit all of these characteristics. However, if the “right the life” is questioned based off unconsciousness then abortion is morally acceptable. Lastly, in some cases abortion is justified, such as a fetus having an abnormality which will severely affect the child’s quality of life after birth. On the other hand, if a female was sexually assaulted then that woman is to be treated with compassion and respect. The directives state that a woman who is raped should be able to defend herself against possible conception from the assault. Explain the three proposed standards for the care of critically ill newborns discussed in the chapter, the Medical Interests Standard, Best Interests Standard, and Relational Quality of Life Standard. Which of these standards is most consistent with your own moral beliefs and why?
The three standards are important for the care of critically ill newborns because these standards set a criterion for decisions for the newborns who cannot speak or defend themselves. These standards make it easier for parents to make an appropriate decision for their child. In addition, the medical interest standard states that regardless of disability or development deserves dignity and worth. Also, this standard cuts parents out of decision making and only medical issues are up for discussion which I find outrageous and unfair. Although, I feel like parents should be given time to adapt themselves to the fact that further treatment will not be beneficial but continuing futile treatment will be harmful for the child whose well-being is the physician’s primary concern. Secondly, the best interest standard states that the treatment decision is solely based on the newborn’s best interest and that potential burdens on the family should not be considered. Lastly, the relational quality of life standard states that human life is a basic good, and life needs to be protected to give the person some hope in striving for other’s values. The standard also states that proper palliative care to the newborn who is critically ill should be given. It includes every characteristic the pursues the goals of life such as physical, social, emotional, and spiritual values that focus on enhancing the quality of life of the newborn and family. Furthermore, based off the three above standards I feel like the relational quality of life standard is consistent with my moral belief because I feel like I always have faith and hope that better things will come. So, with many prayers and with the care provided I would feel comfortable keeping my faith that my baby will make it and be okay and life out a happy and flourished life.
