Squares: (Four ideas that fit your thinking)
1.
The Good news is not just a list of advice that Christians follow and would like to see you
follow as well. The Gospel sets you free from your debt to sin that has already been paid in advance by the blood of Jesus Christ.
2.
Sin is not always a huge planned out rebellion meant to cause mass chaos and destruction, but it is any decision that we make internally that we choose to do.
3.
By thinking of rebellion and sin as huge thought-out events we are trying to downplay it as if we aren’t willingly choosing to rebel against God. As stated in the “Everyday Bible Study” “
As long as we think of rebellion in large terms, we will never see ourselves as being guilty of rebellion”. (
Cartwright, Guiterrez, & Hulshof p. 41).
4. The First act of rebellion against God, Adam and Eve eating the apple, shows that both us humans and the world we live in are broken and fallen because of their rebellion against God.
By observing that we are better able to understand ourselves and the people/world around us.
Triangles: (3 angles you have never considered before)
1.
“
The Scriptures are one book divided into two testaments. These two testaments are made up of sixty-six smaller books” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, & Hulshof p. 36). I had always considered
the bible to be sixty-six books split in half between the old and New Testament as opposed to
one book I almost viewed them as a series rather than one complete set. 2.
“
God has also given human beings some responsibility. They are to take care of God’s good creation.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, & Hulshof p. 41). My main thought has always been that we are to take care of ourselves and our brother sisters in Christ, I had never considered that
God loved the Earth as he did us and because of that we were put in charge of taking care of
the world around us. I had also believed that “taking care” was strictly limited to spirituality rather than the physical wellbeing. 3.
Deciding to sin or to rebel “is a decision that proclaims our rights over and against the ownership of God.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, & Hulshof p. 41). By doing this we believe that our plans are better than Gods, or that our will is more important that his. It is a big deal. Circles: (2 questions that are circling your mind)
1.
Were Adam and Eve born with sin inside of them? Or did It only take root in them after Eve decided to eat from the tree? 2. The Everyday Bible Study states “you don’t go to heaven because you are good and you don’t go to hell because you are bad. You go to heaven because you asked to.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, & Hulshof p. 45). Does asking directly correlate to our actions and our sins?
Heart: (I idea that you love)
1.
“
Of all of the ways that God could have chosen to communicate his message, he chose a person. That person—Jesus Christ, the Son of God—came and boldly announced that freedom and forgiveness of sin are found only in him. He is God’s rescue mission.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, & Hulshof p. 41). I love this idea because God knew that sometimes seeing IS believing, not just the bible, not just the holy spirit speaking to prophets, but a man who lived a sinless life. Not only was Jesus Christ an example of purity and proof of a loving
God, but Gods rescue mission to set us apart from our sin and bring us closer to the kingdom.
