3 THEO C JBRAZ LIBERTY
When I think of the doctrine of inerrancy I am reminded of a famous debate between Martin Luther and Desiderius Erasmus. Speaking on the will Martin Luther states it is “the hinge on which all turns” (Luther 1525). Biblical inerrancy is indeed that important of an issue regarding the veracity of the word of God and in connection with that, the very veracity of our faith. The doctrine of inerrancy becomes that hinge for the truth claims of the Christian faith. Erickson in his book explains seven different approaches or definitions of biblical inerrancy. From the outset, it is important to note that all approaches have strengths and weaknesses but the one that appears to be the best is “Full Inerrancy”. The full inerrancy position “Holds that the Bible is completely true. While the Bible does not primarily aim to give scientific and historical data, such scientific and historical assertions as it does make are fully true.” (Erickson 2014, 191). Although Erickson will expand on this definition, it is important to make a preliminary comment. The aim of the biblical text is not concerned primarily with historical or scientific data. Although the bible undoubtedly contains such material, it is not the core purpose of the biblical text to be a science or history textbook. The main concern of the Bible is theological in nature and is concerned with the person and work of God.
