Ethics Paper 1 Ethics Paper Research 1 CA 516 Elizabeth Noel Lulo Park University 2017
Ethics Paper For our research paper we are tasked with identifying any potential ethical problems in doing the necessary research. My topic is the impact of social media on the non-profit sector. Ethics in relation to qualitative research can be tricky. Potential pitfalls in the research process could be problematic. Being aware of these possible issues, my research process will be designed to either avoid or embrace them. Qualitative research focuses on exploring, describing and studying people in their normal environment. Embedded in this are the concepts of relationships and power between researchers and participants. The nature of ethical problems in qualitative research is subtle and different compared to quantitative research. Ethical issues are present in any kind of research. The research process creates tension between the aims of research to make generalizations for the good of others, and the rights of participants to maintain privacy. Ethics pertains to doing good and avoiding harm. Harm can be prevented or reduced through the application of appropriate ethical principles. Thus, the protection of human subjects or participants in any research study is imperative. As far as IRB approval is concerned I do not think this will be an issue. My selected topic is over a lighter subject. It doesn’t have potential to harm anyone. I am also not studying any vulnerable classes. Qualitative research often generates questions about the ability to protect confidentiality. Risks to individuals participating in qualitative research may not be able to be anticipated when the method and research are evolving throughout the research. Researchers often develop a relationship of trust in research involving in-depth or focus group discussions on sensitive topics. This relationship may be misunderstood as therapist-client relationship or a friendship. Ethical issues come into play with qualitative research based on how you gain access to those you study, confidentiality, and other unpredictable factors. Social media is very much
Ethics Paper about opinions. For our non-profit we have very strict guidelines about what is appropriate and what is not. Ethical issues could come into play if the non-profit board ruled against the exposure via the research. Ethics can be imperative in some situations where qualitative research is concerned. One ethical principle closely linked with research is a term called beneficence. This means doing good for others and preventing harm. Beneficence in some situations may be taken to the extreme like paternalism. A paternalistic approach indicates the denial of autonomy and freedom of choice. For example, the researcher may want to study the problem of violence among women but may decide not to include them because they may be too vulnerable. In this case, the researcher is not giving women the opportunity to decide for themselves and for their experiences to be heard. So his choice would be unethical. One study contributes insights regarding research that incorporates transcripts and the influence of transcript transferral to research participants on the quality of transcripts, and, by extension, on the quality of the research. The transcripts were sent to the interviewees not only to uphold research ethics, but principally to validate what was said during the interviews and to ensure that the written words in the transcript were those said by the interviewees. They did find that the roles of Interviewer, Researcher, and Interviewee can be influenced by their own experiences and bias. (Mero-Jaffe, 2011) Ethics are relevant in all types of research. For my topic in particular I do not forsee many issues. Making sure that I am not violating any privacy guidelines is important. I do think that it is important to evaluate ethics in relation to your qualitative research.
