Week 2 Assignment: Ethics and the Difference Between Right and Wrong This week, we are talking about integrity, philosophy, and ethics. Before this semester, I never really thought much about these subjects. I certainly didn’t think they were as interrelated as they are. But for the purpose of this assignment, I am going to focus on my definitions of right and wrong, how ethics relate to being in nursing school, and how ethics relate to being a nurse. Personally, I define right and wrong by the values I was taught as a kid. That’s what growing up is for, right? Parents are supposed to teach you the difference between right and wrong. But now that I’m older I realize there is more to it than just because my parents told me so. I define right and wrong actions by the feeling I get when I perform an action, and by how others react to said action. Ethics play a large role in nursing school. Not only are we learning about how ethics play into our future career, but we are also faced with our own ethical battles. We all have choices when it comes to how our schoolwork gets done. There are perfect students who can allot 90% of their days to studying, and then there’s those who prioritize other things above their schoolwork. Nowadays there are many options when it comes to cheating. There’s even artificial intelligence that will write your assignments for you. We must remember that if we didn’t do it ourselves, it isn’t doing us any good. This plays into what our textbook was saying about how ethics is the study of right and wrong (Lucas & Stob, 2023). Cheating is wrong, and honest learning is good. The aftermath of being in nursing school is the daunting task of being a nurse. And ethics will be a part of our everyday life. Everyday we will be faced with right and wrong choices. There will be big ethical dilemmas like we see in Grey’s Anatomy, and there will be small things, like “do I call in sick today because I’m just not feeling it?” Granted, that last question isn’t quite
nursing oriented. But it explains how we have right and wrong decisions to make every day. We must keep in mind what’s best for our patients, and the opinions of our patients. It is also our job to ensure that we help voice the needs of our patients (Haddad & Geiger, 2023). Ethics can be complicated. But if we keep in mind the difference between right and wrong, we can make these ethical decisions a bit easier. Right and wrong can vary from person to person. As nurses, we need to make sure we are including our patients in our decision-making and make sure we are doing what’s best for them. If we are doing what’s best for them, we are on the right track to making ethical decisions.
