2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript TRANSCRIPT Section 1 INntroduction The Behavior Analyst Certification Board'’s Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts is a critical tool for your practice. Familiarity with the Code will not only help you make the right decisions when ethical dilemmas arise. It will also give you a basis for explaining and defending the decisions you make when stakeholders whether they are clients, parents of clients, professionals from other fields, or fellow behavior analysts question them. Finally, it will equip you with the knowledge you need to help your fellow analysts with their own ethical concerns. In this activity, you will be presented with several scenarios, and make choices about the right course of action. You will see the results of your decisions, and also learn what section of the code applies to the situation. The scenarios in this activity relate to Element 1 of the Code. Remember to complete all scenarios. Scenario 1 A speech therapist on our team has a reputation as a Chatty Cathy. It is her personality and her way of connecting, but she chats up a storm about her personal life with her clients. She is very funny, and the clients love the wild stories about her zany life. Question 1 of 2 https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 1/15
2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript Still, you wonder. Should you intervene? d. Yes. I'm going to report her to the BACB. This is inappropriate. Feedback: Rationale: Reporting to the BACB is not the way to go. The speech therapist is not bound by the BACB compliance code. b. I think I'm going to ask her if she worries she's oversharing. She'll get the hint. Feedback: Rationale: This is a passive approach, and it may come across as approving of the behavior rather than suggesting that it should change. The best approach is to refrain from intervening. The speech therapist's behavior does not involve another behavior analyst or interfere with your services. It is not the appropriate, professional way to interact with clients, but it is not your place to tell her how to engage in professional practice as a speech therapist. c. No, I'll refrain from intervening. I'm not her supervisor or her peer. Feedback: Rationale: This is the most appropriate approach. The speech therapist's behavior does not involve another behavior analyst or interfere with your services. It is not the appropriate, professional way to interact with clients, but it is not your place to tell her how to engage in professional practice as a speech therapist. Your answer is C. The correct answer is c. Question 2 of 2 https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 2/15
If the speech therapist were a BCBA, what Ethics Code would apply (BACB, 2020)? a. 1.11, Multiple Relationships. Feedback: Rationale: The closest fit would be 1.11, behavior analysts avoid creating multiple relationships, including creating personal relationships with clients. If the speech therapist were a BCBA, and her stories about her own life took up time that is intended for providing services, and could lead to a situation where the client felt like it was more of a personal than professional relationship. b. 1.13, Coercive and Exploitative Relationships. Feedback: Rationale: No, code 1.11 of the code is the closest fit. It states behavior analysts avoid creating multiple relationships, including creating personal relationships with clients. c. 1.05, Practicing within a Scope of Competence. Feedback: Rationale: No, code 1.11 of the code is the closest fit. It states behavior analysts avoid creating multiple relationships, including creating personal relationships with clients. Your answer is q. The correct answer is a. Scenario 2 https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 3/15

2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript Gabrielle is a BCBA who has been supervising an ABA educational program for a three-year-old boy with autism for six months. The child’s parents have recently gone through a long, bitter divorce. Now, Gabrielle has been subpoenaed to testify as to the child’s custody and continued treatment. She has been told that she will be asked which parent would provide the better home for the child. Gabrielle has only worked with the mother during the home visits, and knows of the home situation only from the mother’s perspective. Despite ongoing parent training, the mother does not have good skills for managing the child. The father and his new girlfriend want custody of the child, and they have indicated they don't want any ABA program or therapist in the home. Gabrielle thinks the ABA program is crucial for the child, but does not feel comfortable commenting on or recommending which parent should get custody, because she has only met the father once. Note: Complete Scenario 1 to proceed to Scenario 2. Question 1 of 2 What should Gabrielle do? a. Refuse to testify. Feedback: Rationale: Refusing to testify isn't an option. Gabrielle has been subpoenaed and must testify. The best option is to answer questions truthfully. b. Testify, but only talk about what she knows. If she shows no bias and answers questions truthfully, that's enough. Feedback: Rationale: This is the right option. As long as Gabrielle answers questions truthfully (including "l don't know" if that's the case), avoids showing bias, and only attempts to answer based on what she knows, she is proceeding ethically. https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 4/15
2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript c. Advocate for the mother. That's who Gabrielle has been working with, and maybe with more training, her parenting skills will improve. Feedback: Rationale: This isn't a good idea. Advocating for the mother might lead Gabrielle to answer questions less than truthfully or with bias. The best option is to answer questions truthfully. As long as Gabrielle answers questions truthfully (including "I don't know" if that's the case), avoids showing bias, and only attempts to answer based on what she knows, she is proceeding ethically. Your answer is b. The correct answer is b. Question 2 of 2 What section of the Code would apply in this situation? d. 1.05 Practicing within a Scope of Competence. Feedback: Rationale: No, this section applies to how behavior analysts provide services, teach, or conduct research, not to other activities like court testimony. It is outside the BCBA's experience to testify about either parent's fitness for custody, however. The relevant section is 1.01, Being Truthful. By testifying only about what she knows, Gabrielle remains truthful and honest and also avoids being put on false ground. b. 1.13 Coercive and Exploitative Relationships. Feedback: Rationale: https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 5/15
2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript No, Code 1.13 applies to exploiting persons over whom analysts have supervisory, evaluative, or other authority. Gabrielle has no such authority over the court or the parents. c. 1.01, Being Truthful Feedback: Rationale: That's correct. The BCBA's best choice to is to answer questions truthfully and honestly. Section 1.01 of the code says "Behavior analysts are truthful and honest." Your answer is C. The correct answer is c. Scenario 3 Kim is a BCaBA working in a home-based setting, providing ABA therapy to Chloe, a six-year-old girl with autism. Chloe's mom, Janeen, is a single mom who does not have many friends or time to herself due to the constant care her daughter needs. One day, Janeen asks Kim if she can go to urgent care during Chloe's therapy, as Janeen has had a sore throat and fever for a few days. Question 1 of 2 What should Kim do? a. Agree. She is sick and needs medical care, so it's okay this one time. Still, Kim should remind Janeen that she has to be present for all therapy sessions. Feedback: Rationale: This is not acceptable. It might set a precedent for the next time Janeen needs to go somewhere, and that could lead to a dual relationship. b. Agree. Kim knows she won't need Janeen for anything during therapy, and that Janeen doesn't have friends to help her at times like this. https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 6/15

2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript Feedback: Rationale: This is not acceptable. It could set a precedent, and could lead to a dual relationship. c. Disagree. Kim should remind Janeen that she has to be present for all therapy sessions. Feedback: Rationale: Good call. This is the best option for this situation. Allowing Kim to go to urgent care could set a precedent, and could lead to a dual relationship. Your answer is C. The correct answer is c. Question 2 of 2 But Janeen breaks down crying and begs Kim to let her go this one time. She promises she will never ask again. Now what? a. Kim feels bad for Janeen. She decides to say yes, saying that it has to be just this one time and Janeen has to be back by the end of the therapy appointment. Feedback: Rationale: This isn't a good option. Going to urgent care benefits Janeen, not Chloe, and ABA treatment goals shouldn't be rewritten to meet Janeen's needs for the day. Even if a client is emotional, the Declaration of Professional Practice is very clear about dual relationships. b. Kim suggests that she and Chloe come with Janeen to urgent care. As a community outing, it can be part of their therapy session for the day. Feedback: https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 7/15
2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript Rationale: This is not acceptable. It could set a precedent, and could lead to a dual relationship. c. Kim respectfully refuses, and reminds Janeen that she has to follow the BACB Code of Ethics. Feedback: Rationale: This is the best option for this situation, even if it might be hard. The Declaration of Professional Practice is very clear about dual relationships. Your answer is C. The correct answer is c. Scenario 4 Jaiis a 5 year-old client who works with Clara, the BCBA. During the FBA, Clara and the parents identify the following target behaviors: manding, urinating in toilet, and brushing his teeth. Clara also notes that Jai still sleeps in bed with his parent. Clara also insists on adding the target of sleeping in a separate bed and bedroom of his parents as a goal. Clara indicates that Jai needs to follow directions and provide parents with the appropriate break to sleep. Clara also is further concerned Jai will continue to sleep in the parents bed into adulthood. Jai’s parent disagree that this is a concern as it is traditional in their culture for children to sleep with the family up until they are older children. Question 1 of 1 What should Clara do? a. Put the target of Jai sleeping in his own bed, as it is not considered appropriate to Clara that he disrupts the parents’ sleep. Feedback: Rationale: https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 8/15
2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript This is not a culturally responsive approach to handling this situation. The parents disagreed with the concern over Jai sleeping in bed with them, as it is traditional in their culture for children to sleep with the family up until they are older children. b. Respect the parents’ disagreement on the concern over Jai sleeping in their bed and do not pursue the target. Thank them for bringing this cultural difference to her attention. Clara should then do some research on their culture to learn more and have better consideration for their traditions when providing services. Feedback: Rationale: This is a culturally responsive approach to handling this situation. c. Thank the parents for bringing the cultural difference to her attention, but still encourage them to work on the target of Jai sleeping in his own bed. Suggest a compromise that they will work on shaping the behavior to only letting Jai sleep in their bed on the weekends. Feedback: Rationale: This is not a culturally responsive approach to handling this situation. The parents disagreed with the concern over Jai sleeping in bed with them, as it is traditional in their culture for children to sleep with the family up until they are older children. Clara should respect this and do some research on their culture to learn more and have better consideration for their traditions when providing services. Your answer is b. The correct answer is b. 2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript conducting a FBA for a Deepthi, Linda decides that target goals should include manding, toilet training, and eating with a fork and spoon. Linda meets with Deepthi’'s parents to discuss goals and the parents express that they traditionally eat with their hands rather than utensils. The parents tell Linda that they do not want to target eating with a fork and spoon. Question 1 of 2 What should Linda do? a. Linda should appreciate the parents sharing their traditions and cultural reasons for not wanting to target eating with a fork and spoon and not move forward with this target. Linda should take this opportunity to do some research on the family’s culture and ask questions in a respectful manner as they arise related to programming considerations. Feedback: Rationale: This is the most culturally responsive approach. Linda should actively engage in professional development to acquire knowledge related to cultural responsiveness and diversity. b. Linda should explain that this will be an important skill for when Deepthi begins kindergarten next year so she will “fit in” with all of her peers. Feedback: Rationale: This is not a culturally responsive approach and goes against the parent’s wishes and traditions. This is unethical, as it is not being respectful of the culture and traditions of the client. The focus should not be on what Linda feels is best for Deepthi and making her fit into a new environment. Linda needs to actively engage in professional development to acquire knowledge related to cultural responsiveness and diversity. c. Linda should not force the issue of including this target as a formal goal, but work on it periodically as it couldn’t hurt, right? 2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript Rationale: This is not a culturally responsive approach and blatantly goes against the parent’s wishes and traditions. This is unethical, as it is not being respectful of the culture and traditions of the client. Linda needs to actively engage in professional development to acquire knowledge related to cultural responsiveness and diversity. Your answer is q. The correct answer is q. Question 2 of 2 Which BACB Ethics Code best applies in both scenario 4 and 57 a. 1.05,Practicing within Scope of Competence Feedback: Rationale: This is not the most relevant code to apply to this scenario. Clara and Linda are competent in the behavior analytic procedures, but need to remember another ethics code surrounding the culture and traditions of the client. b. 1.08, Nondiscrimination Feedback: Rationale: This is not the most relevant ethics code, given the details of this scenarios. Clara and Linda need to remember another ethics code surrounding the culture and traditions of the client. Better education on the culture and traditions of clients and their families leads to better service delivery and understanding the reasons for program goals. c. 1.07, Cultural Responsiveness and Diversity Feedback: Rationale: https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 11/15

The correct answer is c. Scenario o Nancy is transitioning her child from Early Intervention to Committee on Preschool Special Education2 (CPSE) funding. She wants to get different services upon transition than she thinks the committee will approve. The child has a diagnosis of autism and is receiving extensive hours of applied behavior analysis as well as related services at home. Nancy has exercised considerable control over the employment of providers in the home under early intervention. She and a lead member of the home-based team communicate to Lonna, the BCBA on the home team, that Lonna needs to write a progress report emphasizing the child’s weaknesses and downplaying the progress that the child is making. They want this report faxed to the committee chairperson right before the next meeting. Question 1 of 2 What should Lonna do? a. Lonna provides an accurate report to the committee and parent well before the meeting. Feedback: Rationale: This is the best approach. The report should include all pertinent, truthful information and give accurate information about the child's strengths and https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 12/15

Lonna should also share the report with Nancy, and discuss the importance (and Lonna's ethical obligation) of serving the child's best interests with timely, accurate information. b. Lonna decides to do as Nancy asks. Feedback: Rationale: This is not the best approach, as it is not providing all truthful information in a timely manner. Review Ethics Code 1.01, Being Truthful. Instead, Lonna should provide an accurate report to the committee and to Nancy well before the meeting. c. Lonna asks to be removed from the case. Feedback: Rationale: This is not the best option. Nancy is not acting ethically, and that needs to be addressed. Instead, Lonna should provide an accurate report to the committee and to Nancy well before the meeting. Your answer is q. The correct answer is a. Question 2 of 2 Nancy is not happy with Lonna's decision. She's very concerned that her child will not get the services she believes she needs. When she sees the report, she tells Lonna to take out the information about progress, and insists that she share the new version of the report right before the meeting. She threatens to have Lonna removed from the case if she doesn't. Now what? https://media.capella.edu/coursemedia/psy7710element237162/transcript.asp 13/15
2/4/24, 5:58 PM Section 1 Transcript a. The child will benefit from more intensive services, and Nancy is in charge. Lonna decides to change the report. Feedback: Rationale: Lonna should share the BACB Ethics Code with Nancy and remind her that she has to adhere to this code in order to provide ethical services - and maintain her BCBA status. If Nancy continues to resist, it would be best for Lonna to terminate services and also inform the committee of the mother's manipulative request. b. She can't afford to lose this case, her student loans are through the roof! Lonna decides to make the changes Nancy wants. Feedback: Rationale: This is not an appropriate choice. Providing all truthful information in a timely manner is an ethical obligation for a BCBA. c. Lonna decides to remind Nancy of her ethical obligations.
