Based on the short synopsis of the families last 5 weeks in counseling I do believe there are a few codes of ethics that have possibly been broken. The easiest code for me to identify having been broken would be from the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors Code of Ethics, Section A: The Counseling Relationship and Client Welfare, Couple and family counselors advocate for the family as a whole system while considering the uniqueness of each family member (“International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors Ethics Code,” 2018). This code of ethics would seem to have been broken by the counselor focusing on the teenage daughter setting boundaries and not on a family solution as a whole. Another ethics code from the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors that was broken during this session would be from Section J.3 couple and family counselors respect the rights of individuals and members to define their relationships and family units beyond boundaries imposed by dominant culture or tradition (“International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors Ethics Code,” 2018). By instructing the client to set clear boundaries with her parents and then instructing her to exercise more independence from her family and seek to become self-actualized, the counselor is projecting what she thinks would solve the clients’ issues onto the client and not looking to hear what the client needs from the situation. The reason I chose Section J.3 as a broken ethics code is because the client comes from a Korean family that may very well have different values on how to treat their parents and other elders that would not mesh well with the boundary setting ideas the counselor has offered.
The last thing I noticed about the information given about the session is the counselors extensive knowledge about anxiety disorder. The counselor notes having treated over 100 patients struggling with anxiety as the reason for having the teenager set clear boundaries. This information gave
me reason to believe the counselor may be working outside of their expertise by taking on a family counseling case. Both the American Counseling Association and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy codes of ethics have sections mentioning practicing within a counselor’s skill set. Code C.2.b of the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics states, New Specialty Areas of Practice, Counselors practice in specialty areas new to them only after appropriate education, training, and supervised experience. While developing skills in new specialty areas, counselors take steps to ensure the competence of their work and protect others from possible harm (American Counseling Association, 2014). Code 3.6 of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Code of Ethics states that, while developing new skills in specialty areas, marriage and family therapists take steps to ensure the competence of their work and to protect clients from possible harm. Marriage and family therapists practice in specialty areas new to them only after appropriate education, training, and/or supervised experience (AAMFT, 2015). With both of these codes of ethics covering this topic it is extremely important to ensure counselors are working withing the scope of their training. References
