Module One Short Paper
Professional ethics exist to ensure that members of a certain group of people in a professional setting conduct themselves in ways that are appropriate for the professional environment and are specific to those people and may not affect someone who is not involved in the same environment. The world global is used to signify something pertaining to the world as a whole and global ethics is a set of standards that that everyone on the planet should follow (Hutchings). Defining global ethics is broad though, commonality between cities, countries, linguistically, socially, and culturally may differ from culture to culture. Basic human rights have a different meaning between person to person and who decides what is right and what is wrong?
Ethical frameworks are an important set of principles and values that guide someone in decision making. It is the foundation of any ethical question and should provide a set of standards that help make choices. There are three common frameworks which help the decision-making process. Utilitarianism is the goal of making most people happy while minimizing pain and suffering. Deontology focuses on the duties and obligations that people may have, regardless of the consequences and some believe that some actions are intrinsically right or wrong regardless of outcomes, this would be more appropriate for providing clear guidance in a specific situations like professional ethics. and virtue ethics focus on traits and aligns with the virtues that people possess. Climate change is the process where temperature, rainfall, and other weather vary over decades or more. Today we are experiencing rapid rising of temperature because of pollution, burning of
fossil fuels and the emissions of greenhouse gases. The benefit of using an ethical framework in global management of climate change is that we all live on the same planet, and we all breathe the same air, drink the same water. Looking at the utilitarian approach-the consequence of pollution is that if we can get pollution under control by limiting the rise of the temperature caused by emissions, and evaluate it every few years, we can save the planet and eventually companies can be at zero emissions and stop the snowball effect that pollution causes. The Paris Agreement is a global movement to help correct the damage we have done to the world and help hold countries accountable for not meeting deadlines and goals. To quote Sharan
Burrow, who is the head of the International Trade Union Confederation “
There are no jobs on a dead planet. We need to have a sustainable planet with decent work and shared prosperity that provides workers with hope and security. The other issue is that if you are going to transition every industry, and we must, in line with achieving net-zero emissions, then we need to make that transition just.” (UN.org) We need to secure the future and that takes time and commitment from everybody. Policy makers must be an example of global ethics and agree on the right course to protect the future.
