Tyniecia Thomas Precis 3 Chapter 2 introduces us to Moral Relativism. Moral Relativism is the idea that there is no one size fits all when it comes to morality. It caters to what boils down to be one’s individual moral practice. It is speaking to one’s own firsthand experiences and situational circumstances being used as a guide to decide what they feel and consider is wrong and what is right. Relativism says that the only way to decide whether something is wrong or right is if it is supported or not supported by a group one identifies as. Relativism is broken down to subjective relativism which is the perception that one’s action is honestly right if one agrees of it, so ultimately if I believe it is right, then it is right. On the other hand, is moral objectivism which standpoint states that the perception of wrong and right is the same for all people. Cultural relativism talks about right and wrong being define by one’s culture. Emotivism has the standpoint of wrong and right is neither false nor true but is driven by attitudes and illustrations of how you feel. This interesting view states one cannot disagree in beliefs, only in attitudes. It disputes that moral facts even exist and since there is no existence of moral facts, one cannot disagree about it—it is all about how you feel about and towards whether something is good or bad. In Chapter 2 we were able to dive into the thought processes of James Rachel and Ruth Benedict and their stance on moral relativism. We were given the opportunity to dissect and compare how they have varying, but sometimes similar viewpoints on what is considered both the driving force and acceptable in the sense of morality.
