Chapter 2 Assignment Cultural Influences on Parenting After reading Chapter 2, answer the following questions to reflect on your cultural practices. 1. Identify some cultural values, beliefs, and traditions (including child-rearing practices) that were a part of your childhood. (200 word minimum) Growing up, my mom instilled in me a deep sense of spirituality and a belief that there is a life force that permeates through all things. We were taught that there is a connection between all animate and inanimate objects. Our family didn't view child-rearing as an individual responsibility but rather a shared, community activity. Our extended family members, family friends, and important members of the community were all involved in raising us. We were taught to be obedient and respectful towards our elders and within our family and kinship networks. The values of interdependence and collectivism were emphasized in our upbringing, and we were taught to be mindful of the interconnectedness of all things. We were also taught the importance of spirituality and religion, which were seen as essential components of our lives. My mother was particularly keen on instilling in us the importance of cleanliness, both physical and spiritual. She taught us to value family ties and the importance of maintaining close relationships with family members. Independence was also emphasized, as we were encouraged to take responsibility for our actions and decisions. In addition, obedience, religion, and moral and personal values such as respecting others were given significant importance in our upbringing. Overall, my upbringing was characterized by a strong sense of community, spirituality, and interconnectedness of all things. These values have stayed with me throughout my life and continue to shape my worldview and approach to life. 2. Are the same values, beliefs, and traditions a part of your adult life? Why? Why not? (200 word minimum) Yes. Because during my childhood, my mother imparted upon me the principles of honesty, integrity, and compassion. Despite encountering prejudice and insensitivity from those who oppress us, I have managed to adopt these principles in my interactions with others as an adult. I firmly believe that treating others with kindness and respect is crucial, regardless of their background or beliefs. The importance of family and building those relationships amongst each other. Always having each other's back no matter what. Being an independent woman and taking care of my own business. Growing up as a follower of the Christian faith, I find solace and fortitude in communal worship, which fosters a sense of togetherness with others. Even in the darkest moments, my faith has provided me with hope and the courage to move forward in life. My faith acts as a constant reminder of the significance of kindness and forgiveness, motivating me to progress in life. Throughout my upbringing, my family emphasized the significance of respecting elders, displaying good manners, and avoiding disrespectful behavior. I firmly
believe that showing respect towards others not only demonstrates good manners but also reflects one's ethical and moral principles. These values have become an integral part of my character, and I strive to continue to uphold them in all aspects of my life. 3. If you are a parent or if you were to become a parent, what cultural practices have/will you keep, and which ones have/will you change with your own children? (200 word minimum) As a parent, my primary focus would be on ensuring that my family's Christian beliefs are not only maintained but also passed down to my children. To achieve this, I would ensure that my children participate in Bible camps and Sunday school, where they would learn about the values and teachings of our faith. Moreover, I would also make sure that our family attends church regularly, and we have regular discussions about our beliefs and values. In addition to this, I believe that it's crucial to surround my children with their extended family, as it would help them understand the importance of family and foster strong relationships with their relatives. Spending quality time with them would also help me understand their interests, likes, and dislikes, which would enable me to tailor their upbringing to their specific needs. Furthermore, I would assign my children household chores and responsibilities, such as cleaning their rooms, doing the dishes, and laundry, among others. This approach would instill in them a sense of responsibility and teach them the importance of contributing to the family's well-being. Additionally, it would also develop their work ethic and prepare them for the demands of adulthood. As a person of color, I understand the unfortunate reality that the world is biased against people like us. Therefore, I would prepare my children for this reality by equipping them with the ability to remain calm and well-mannered in any situation, to avoid being stigmatized. I would also make sure to teach them about the importance of respecting others and being respectful towards themselves. Lastly, while I grew up being taught to unquestioningly obey my mother's words and to be reserved and polite in public, I now realize the importance of encouraging my children to speak out when necessary. I would make an adjustment in the way I would teach my children to value my words and opinions while encouraging them to express their own thoughts and opinions. Having this kind of approach would help them become more confident and independent individuals, ready to face the world with a strong sense of self-worth. 4.
