Morality, Knowledge and Religion
The concepts of morality, knowledge, and religion held significant importance in the lives of individuals and in the shaping of society. These three elements were intertwined and influenced each other, shaping the beliefs and values of the people living during this time. When America was founded in 1776, there was a different view of morality, knowledge and religion. In
those days, these principles were held in high regard. In our country’s official documents, you can often see virtue, learning and piety emphasized. They are also called morality, knowledge and religion. Religion was often seen as Christianity; morality is the characteristics of a Chirstian
and knowledge is a Biblical worldview. Because our nation was built on these views, if we stray from one, chaos will ensue due to the government dissolving. In our book, it says “to raise up from among our youth, men eminent for virtue, learning, and piety, to his service in Church and State” Mark A. Beliles and Douglas Anderson, Contending for the Constitution 60 (2005). Our founding fathers wanted young men to not serve the government, but God. We are religious people and our laws are based on the Chirstian religion. Noah Webster said, “No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government in-
tended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people.” Mark A. Beliles and Douglas Anderson, Contending for the Constitution 61 (2005). He is saying that Christianity is the driving
force in shaping the moral fabric of our nation. When we separated from England, we had to make sure that we could last. So, we modeled ourselves using religion. The founding fathers also
realized that our nation would not thrive if we did not have a moral foundation, which is rooted in the bible. In our nation today, we have seemed to lose our moral foundations. This verse in Titus talks a lot about who we need to be pure with our moral foundation, “to the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their
minds and consciences are corrupted.” Titus
1:15 (NIV). We have lost our moral foundation. We need to get back into the bible like the founding fathers wanted us to. But we also have to remember what the Declaration of Independence also said, “
we hold these truths to be self-
evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
