CWV-101 DQ
Topic 1 DQ 1
Recall a time when you met someone with a different worldview than yours, and you had a difficult time relating.
1.
What challenges did you have relating to that person?
2.
How might an understanding of the other's worldview have helped you in that situation? The two categories that worldview can fall into is private and shared worldview. Recently, there was a local tragedy of a father, who stabbed his pregnant wife, during a meeting location at a community church, took off with their 1-year old daughter, and crashed a couple of miles from the scene. A witness who saw the crash went over to help and got the daughter out of the car. However, the father stabbed the witness, who was holding the daughter, grabbed the daughter,
and threw her over the ravine. The daughter passed away at the scene. The father was arrested and has a $1 million dollar bail.
In California Supreme Court declares the death penalty unconstitutional however this father may face the death penalty.
There have been so many shared worldviews by a group of individuals that taxpayer’s money shall not be allowed for this father to live and proceed with the death penalty by lethal injection. However, as a private worldview, what if the father had underlying mental health issues or under control substances such as drugs, alcohol, etc. shall the father still be punished by the lethal injection, the death penalty? Of course, the father shall remain in jail for the rest of his life and
face the ugly truth of his action by taking his daughter’s life. To better understand why some would support the death penalty without doubt or reasoning would allow me to grasp why a person will choose to take a life because a life was taken.
Topic 1 DQ 2
After viewing one of the films listed in the "Topic 1 Discussion Question Film Resource" from the topic materials, answer the following two questions. Before you post, change the title of the post to include the title of the movie you are discussing.
1.
What is one worldview depicted in the movie?
2.
Which character(s) held that worldview?
Provide at least two quotes or scene descriptions from the movie to defend your point.
The one worldview represented in the movie, “
Signs”, would be Theism. Even though, Graham had lost his faith in God he was still able to distinguish between the physical and spiritual worlds. God who not only created the universe but continuously maintaining it and guide the course of human history to his purpose (Hiles, & Smith, 2015).
Graham Hess, played by Mel Gibson, was a priest who lost his faith after losing his wife from a tragic car accident which causes him to quit the priesthood. Graham's son, Morgen, was standing in the crops point at the circles and stated, “I think God did it.” The neighbor who accidentally killed his wife by falling asleep while driving made a statement to Graham, “
People who kill reverends wives aren’t exactly ushered to the front of the line in Heaven”. At the dinner, in which it appears that the family was having their “last supper”, Morgan wanted to say grace however, Graham said with anger, “
I am not wasting one more minute of my life on prayers”. There was a scene in the basement when Graham was yelling out “Don’t do this to me again, I hate you, I hate you” as he was holding his son, Morgen, who as having an asthma attack. The next day Graham’s brother told, “My older brother was everything that I wanted to be to start losing faith in things. I saw it in your eyes and I don’t ever want to see your eyes like that again.” Graham who regains his faith by remembering what his wife said to him as her last dying words were about to fight off the aliens. With regaining his faith Graham return to the priesthood.
Topic 2 DQ 1
Where do atheism and Christianity agree and disagree on views of the origin of the universe?
What difference might someone's belief about the origin of the universe make in how that person lives his or her life?
Atheism and Christianity, both agree that there is a universe and there was a beginning. However, the disagreement between the two is that Atheist belief that the universe has been in existence for eternity and in some form that consists
of all matter and energy (CWV-101 Topic 2 Overview). Christianity believes that the universe was an eternal Spirit, who exists separately from the universe; God creates all (CWV-101 Topic 2 Overview). The universe is more complex that is unknown by many scientists and the spiritual dimension is endless beyond the study of scientists.
I think there will be a difference in how a person lives their life by the way they believe about the origin of the universe. For example, for a person who believes that the universe was in existence by matter and energy, may believe that the universe has no purpose and there is no meaning to life. That person may do wrong and have no affects on it. However, for someone who does belief that the universe was created by an eternal Spirit that created all will live their life with purpose. The ability to distinguish from right and wrong. If wrong occurs that person may be affected by it and ask for forgiveness of their sins.
Topic 2 DQ 2
Explain who God is to the Christian using at least three characteristics of God. Why are the characteristics of God so important to the Christian worldview?
For Christianity, God is the ultimate reality. The Creator of all things and God is sovereign. God had numerous characteristics and attributes that were described by Christians. Some of God’s characteristics are that he is unchanging, eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-present (Diffey, 2015). However, the following three characteristics of who God is to Christians are:
God is good to all whom he created. “The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made” (Genesis 145:9).
God does not become angry fast and devoted in His love. “The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” (Genesis 145:8).
God will be there when you call on him. “
The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth “ (Genesis 145:18).
Characteristic of God is important to the Christian worldview because God created humanity as an image of God. This is confirmation that God loves His creation of humanity. Christian do right by God to be able to spend eternal life with Him.
God will forgive those who sin and ask for forgiveness. God continues to love because he is unchanging.
Topic 3 DQ 1
The Christian worldview provides an explanation for human nature and the story of the creation and fall (Gen. 1-3). A great deal of the suffering that people experience and much of man's inhumanity to man are explained by this description of the fall of human nature. Is this characterization of human nature accurate? Why or why not? If not, what is an alternative explanation?
I do believe that the characterization of human nature is accurate. God created man as an image of him, without sin. Humanity fell into the fall of sin by disobeying God’s command. In Genesis 2:16-17 (English Standard Version) Adam and Eve were instructed not to eat the fruit from the tree of good and evil. Eve allows Satan, the
serpent, to take advantage of her by believing that Adam and she can be like God. Adam and Eve did not show their dominion, that God gave them. They fell into temptation and ate the fruit from the tree of good and evil, which caused all of humanity to fall into sin. Adam and Eve’s temptation and fall into sin are referred to as “original sin” that caused humanity to fall into sin.
After the fall, humans became sinful by nature and continues with the same pattern to date. We are vulnerable to temptation and rebelliousness. It is up to us to make that decision to continue to walk with God, being an image of him or allow Satan to misguide us into sin. Even though sin is the reality of human nature, God will not leave us there (Topic 3 Overview, 2017).
Topic 3 DQ 2
How does the fall relate to tragedies like 9/11 and disasters such as the Tsunami of 2004?
Explain how your reaction to evil events has caused you to reassess your worldview.
In Genesis 3 (English Standard Version), the disobedience of Adam and Eve causes the fall of humanity into sin, and God’s curse that relates to all tragedies. Due to the fall, it opens humanity and nature to suffering plus evil in the world. The tragedy of 9/11 was pure evilness of Satan. Those terrorist attacks allow themselves to be influenced by Satan like how Eve said that the serpent deceived her and she ate the fruit (Genesis 3:13 English Standard Version). The disasters like the Tsunami of 2004 does relate to the fall of humanity as God placed a curse on the ground because of Adam (Genesis 3:17 English Standard Version).
This week's study material and assignments have given me a more in-depth understanding of evil events. Yes it does cause me to reassess my worldview. The reason why and how humanity fell into sin by the influence of evil, Satan. God curse humanity and the grounds. God allows things to happen because he has a plan. We have to make decisions to either follow God, be obedient to him, or be influenced by evil, Satan.
Topic 4 DQ 1
According to the Bible and the Christian worldview, Jesus was fully God and fully human. Interacting with the readings, especially Philippians 2:5-11 and Hebrews 1:1-3, explain why this teaching of Jesus' full divinity and full humanity is important to Christianity.
The teachings of Jesus' full divinity and humanity are important to Christianity, which shows the reconciliation of humanity with God by the suffering and sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. In the Bible virtue Philippians 2:5-11 (English Standard Version) Jesus was in the image of God that dwells with his people. Jesus was a form of a servant and born in the likeness of men. Jesus was fully God, fully human, and obedient to the point of his death on a cross. A similar passage in Hebrews 1:1-3 (English Standard Version) God spoke to humanity by his Son, Jesus Christ, who is an exact imprint of God’s nature. The teachings divinity of Jesus prevents Christian from having an ambiguous being. God becoming Jesus, who is fully God and fully man indicates that Christian God is a deeply personal being, communicating, and relating to humans in intimate love.
Topic 4 DQ 2
Read the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) and answer the following questions:
1.
What do you believe is the main theme Jesus is communicating?
2.
Explain the three principal characters. Who do you identify with the most, and why?
I believe the main theme to the parable of the Prodigal Son, Luke 15:11-32 (English Standard Version), is the forgiveness of God. God is considered the father, with two sons. While one of the son requests for his inheritance by the father, which was given, he leaves the father, and begin living a life of sin and suffering. The other brother maybe represents one of God’s disciples, who remain in God’s care however makes judgments of others who have sinned. The brother that
was living his in sin and suffering return to the father, God, asking for his forgiveness. The forgiveness of God, the father, allows the son back into the house of God.

The three principal characters were the God the Father, the oldest son the disciple, and the younger son the sinner. Humanity sin by nature. I identify most with the prodigal son who is subject to sin, just like each and every one of us. However, the main theme shows that the love of God for us will never go away, even life we live a life of sin. God will always be there. He will always forgive us and welcome us back. Therefore, we have to be able to make a conscious effort to return to God.
Topic 5 DQ 1
After reading the account of the resurrection of Christ in Luke 24 and again in the assigned textbook chapters, express
why the resurrection is so important to the Christian worldview.
The resurrection of Christ is important to the Christian worldview as it is the base of Christian faith without it there is no Christian faith. The death and resurrection of Jesus proved that humanity has received forgiveness, and the relationship with God has been restored. Jesus died and came back from the dead. By Jesus conquering death not only for himself but all humankind by rising from death, God showed that Jesus’s message of love and forgiveness was more powerful than death. Also, believing in Jesus and following the example of his life and his teaching would lead to eternal life after death. The resurrection is the sign of God’s salvation offered to all people. Jesus is the only way to salvation. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is crucial to the Christian faith.
Topic 5 DQ 2
According to the Christian worldview, how does one gain eternal life? Use Bible verses to support your response.
How does the Christian concept of hope for the afterlife differ from that concept in other worldviews?
It is mentioned quite a few times in the Bible of how one gains eternal life. In the Gospel of John, Jesus teaches his followers about the afterlife and what it would be like to live with God. By doing so, is through Jesus; he is the way, the truth, and the life. In Matthew 7:12-14 (English Standard Version), the verse mentioned about judging others, doing to others as you would have them do to you. Love is an action and reaching out to others is an action. Jesus explains the “narrow gate”, which refers to the final judgment, the time when humanity will be judge by God. Jesus invites us to make a choice in order to enter the kingdom of Heaven, through the narrow door. Therefore, the word of Jesus is something not to only be understood, but it should become life. There are two gates, the wide gate leads to destruction which is easy to get through. However, the one to heaven is narrow and only through Jesus Christ, which is not so easy. This gate leads to eternal life with God. In addition, there is a right and a wrong road, do not take the easy way out or the often-traveled road and only a few will enter the gates of heaven.
The Christian concept of hope for the afterlife differs from that concept in other worldviews because the Christian worldview believes in heaven and hell, as a result to live a lifestyle that is the way to heaven. Christian believe that humanity is the child of God, living through Jesus Christ, that once enters into heaven on judgment day. Therefore, worldviews such as Atheists hold a different concept from the Christian worldview. An Atheist does not believe in God, heaven, or hell there once one dies, they are no longer inexistent. To Atheist, it is a body in a grave and there are no thoughts of the afterlife.
Topic 6 DQ 1
Jesus made many absolute statements such as the following:
John 14:6: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (NIV).
Matthew 7:13-14: "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it" (NIV).
Interacting with these statements, how would you answer someone accusing Christianity of exclusivism (as defined in
Chapter 8 of the textbook)?
My response to someone accusing Christianity of exclusivism is that exclusivism is a part of the Christian view. There is only one God and the way to God is through Jesus as mention in John 14:6 (English Standard Version). Therefore, Jesus is
the only way to salvation. Exclusivism has been a part of Christianity since the Roman Empire as Christian held this view even if it led to persecution. They are committed and faithfully follow Jesus, as he is the only to salvation. According to Matthew 7:13-14 there are two roads; one road is easier and often used that leads to destruction. On the other road, it is less used and harder. However, the harder road leads to life with God.
Topic 6 DQ 2
How would you explain how a good, loving, and all-powerful God allows suffering and evil in his creation? Cite a specific example of suffering and/or evil that you have seen or experienced.
God allows suffering and evil in his creation that originate from the original sin by Adam and Eve who decided to be rebellious against Gods’ command. Humanity was created with free will the choice to love however, due to the fall evil exist in the world. There will be interference in your free will by God, however with the wrong path taken you will suffer.
As well, suffer comes in many other ways. This is a reminder to not take life for granted, get right with God, and each day
of your life is a gift. No matter what there may be times that we suffer but realized that God is with us and will guide us through it.
This may be a current sensitive topic of the death of George Floyd. Hundreds and possibly millions of people watch the devasting video of George Floyd be restrained by four police officers. The viewers with compassion suffered by watching how George plead for his life and call out for his deceased mother before he becomes unconscious, which afterward he appeared to be dead. Jorge encounters evil and suffered a painful death. This incident causes many sufferings to others as riots are occurring and destroying many people’s livelihoods. It appears that racial injustice has become the root of all
evil, what happened to “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these,” Matthew 12:31 (English Standard Version).
Topic 7 DQ 1
After reviewing the Chapter 11 "Finding Your Purpose" section, discuss some of the ways that people might discover their purpose.
Where are you in the process of finding your purpose?
According to Chapter 11 “Finding Your Purpose” section there are many ways that people find their purpose. Someone may be doing meaningful work however is miserable doing it have not found their purpose. Therefore, for someone who
enjoys the job that is fulfilling, satisfying, and meaningful to them, this person has found their purpose; calling from God.
There are many like Eric Liddell, a Scottish runner, who had two purposes; being a runner and a missionary to China. One
calling or purpose is not more worthy than the other as God calls people to different servings. Finding your purpose may take time and consistent changes as God is consistently calling people to different vocations.
For more than seventeen years I worked with disadvantage and neglected youth. My passion was to care and love them as my own regardless of their extreme behaviors. There were traumatic changes that occur, which shifted me to a different path. I had this inner passion of wanting to seek a college degree and I decided to focus on my educational path. I was told that I am too old to be a college student. I am spiritually in a place where I am not allowing any negative comments or vibes to bring me down. Prior to enrolling in GCU, I searched GCU and other local colleges. I caught myself going back to the GCU website not only two times but three times. I believe this is my calling, my purpose to attend GCU,
and pursue a college degree. Topic 7 DQ 2
What might be some of the ramifications of living without purpose?
How might having purpose in life impact the way people live their daily lives, and make long-term plans and decisions?
Some of the ramifications of living without purpose lead to poor and erratic choices that may lead to sin. At that moment someone living without purpose may seem free-living as how one wants is appealing. However, in due time people living this way may end up doing nothing out of their day, lacking the motivation that may lead to a state of depression or hopelessness.
Therefore, having a clear purpose can impact people in their daily lives, which can motivate people to proceed with long term goals and decisions to create the most meaningful life. With this clear purpose you are able to distinguish what is important and what is not. You understand that your life is filled with direction and meaning. For instance, knowing if the job is the job that gives you the deepest gladness. You will have this inner drive and passion to reach your long term goals. You will naturally get better at it, even if you are starting from ground zero because the time you spend on it will give you the experience and skills to succeed. Therefore, success is forthcoming, you will excel in whatever you set out to do. “There’s no greater gift than to honor your life’s calling. It’s why you were born. And how you become most truly alive.” – Oprah Winfrey
