As a  health care manager  in today’s industry, your values and ethics will guide your daily decisions.  Discuss the following questions with the class: What impact do individual values have on ethical decision-making? Provide an example. What may change an individual’s values or ethics? Provide an example. .
An ethical decision is the process of reviewing and deciding on a course of action that is in accordance with moral standards and values. It entails considering the benefits and disadvantages of various options and making decisions that assist those involved. It also includes evaluating the potential concerns of an action and the effect it may have on others. How you were raised, your religious beliefs and personal experiences all play a part in our ethical decisions. In healthcare, we will all come across decisions we will need to make that may not go with our personal beliefs. There will be patients who will sign a DNR (Do not resuscitate), personally I feel that if it was my family member, I would want everything done to keep my family member alive. However, I know family members who would rather not have tubes or suffer through excessive procedures to keep them alive. Though I have my personal feelings, ethically I am required to follow patients’ wishes.  What may change an individual’s values or ethics is the knowledge they obtain by your environment, personal experiences, the way you are raised, religious beliefs, or the companies' policies and procedures. An example is Jehovah witness’s does not believe in blood transfusions. Though we may know that blood transfusion can save their life, depending on their illness, their religious beliefs will not allow this. They believe if it is time for them to pass, that it is God’s will and should not intervene. Being knowledgeable and all sides of a situation is important to make an ethical decision.
