PHIL 1402 – 01 INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT UNIT 1
To be honest, this is the first time I am coming across the world “School of
Thought”. The school of thought include; Idealism, Realism, Pragmatism and
existentialism. Kindly note that both Idealism and Realism are known as general or
World philosophies, having their roots in the work of the ancient Greek philosophers;
Plato and Aristotle. (

Pragmatism can be defined as a philosophical movement that includes those
who claim that an ideology or proposition is true if it works satisfactorily, that the
meaning of a proposition is to be found in the practical consequences of accepting it,
and that impractical ideas are to be rejected. (

> pragmati). In a
more easily way, Pragmatism simply means the practicality of thoughts, ideas,
opinions, stance, and propositions.
Personal example:
For example: Buying the Affordable Laptop: during the start of my studies at the
University of the People, my dream was to get the latest model of a MacBook due to it’s
complexity, quickness, build quality and how easy it will make my studies become but
all this will make me get into debt. So I decided that the pragmatic decision was to buy
a more affordable starter laptop and maybe one day, I could upgrade to that dream
laptop.
According to Wikipedia.com, Positivism can be defined as a philosophical school
that holds that all genuine knowledge is either true by definition or positive—meaning
a posteriori fact derived by reason and logic from sensory experience. Other ways of
knowing, such as intuition, introspection, or religious faith, are considered or rejected.

Personal example:
One clear personal application to this school of thought is when I am given an
assignment to do; I am required by my instructor to provide a substantial response to
each post. In this case, I tend to use the Uopeople library and some external source like
YouTube to gather the information needed to gave back a substantial response which I
am positively sure of. Also, I tend to avoid plagiarism by not coping others words
directly into my work, give a clear difference such as using in-text- citation and
paraphrasing each sentence I got from external source.
Realism can be defined as the view that a reality of material objects and
abstract concepts are perceived as existence in an external world independently of our
minds and perceptions. In other words, Realism is the viewpoint which accords to
things which are known or perceived an existence or nature which is independent of
whether anyone is thinking about or perceiving them. (

)
Personal example:
For example, if we see a beautiful butterfly then it is beautiful in reality and this
is not just some human sense of color perception and aesthetics. Likewise, if we see an
ugly thing, a naïve realist would say this actually ugly as opposed to being a human
judgment.
Even though, I haven’t seen God Almighty, Heaven and Hell, I strongly believe that
they all exist.
2. The most in line of the three basic school of philosophy involve in my decision
process on a day to day basis are Pragmatism, Positivism and Realism because, both
Pragmatism and Positivism involves critical and analytical thinking and are used to
resolve daily issues. While realism for me, is primarily based on my faith as a Christian.
