Part 1:
When I think about who is in charge of our futures, I am exploring the interesting idea of whether our lives are already decided or if we have the freedom to make our own choices. Based on what we talked about in our philosophy class, it's clear that the idea of free will means that individuals can make choices to shape their future. The ability to
make decisions without being influenced by outside forces is really important in this belief system. However, it's important to understand that compatibilism suggests that free will and determinism can both exist together. From this view, outside things can affect our choices, but we still have some control over what we decide.
Alternatively, determinism says that events, like how our lives turn out, are already decided by things like our genes, surroundings, and what's happened to us in the past. The deterministic viewpoint says that our choices are not really free because they are already decided by things that happened before.
In my own opinion, I go back and forth between these points of view. I like the idea of being able to make my own choices, but I know that outside factors can also affect the decisions I make. Maybe, a practical way of thinking that combines both our choices and things out of our control could help us understand better how we create our own futures.
Part 2:
Thinking about why bad things exist while also believing in a good God is a really hard question that people have wondered about for a long time. From a religious point of view that believes in a higher power, theodicy tries to understand why a kind God would allow bad things to happen in the world.
Some people believe that allowing bad things to happen tests how people react and show their strength and character when facing tough situations. Another idea says that
the ability to make choices, given by a kind God, can lead to bad things happening. The ability to choose, even when the choices are not morally right, is a natural part of being human.
However, people still wonder why a kind and all-powerful God doesn't stop the suffering caused by evil. Some think that if God intervened, it would take away our ability to make real choices. In the complicated relationship between our choices and God's kindness, the fact that bad things happen is a mystery that makes us wonder about what God is like and why life is so hard.
