PHIL 105-LS Ethical Dilemmas
Fall 2022
Professor Anderson
Essay on Ethical Reasoning
For your essay, you will discuss an ethical dilemma or moral choice you have faced, or are facing, and analyze it from your own system of ethical reasoning. The ethical situation should be based on an actual professional, religious, political, or other personal experience and will be described in two to three paragraphs, leaving out actual names, etc.. In constructing your own system of ethical reasoning, you will describe your personal ethical policy and process and explain the source and substance of your ethical values. Please also incorporate other perspectives from the course as appropriate and weigh their strengths and weaknesses in relation to your issue. This essay will be approximately three pages, double-spaced (not including your bibliography). Your paper should use references, in addition to the textbooks, and include at least
one primary source. All of your sources will be cited in an appropriate and consistent format (e.g. APA or MLA). This essay is due before 5pm on December 13. A dropbox will be created in
Brightspace for this assignment. The essay is worth 25%.
It may be helpful to think of this as one essay in four parts: 1.
First, introduce your ethical situation or moral dilemma. End this section with a thesis statement. The thesis might be something like “Analyzing this dilemma from the perspectives of deontology and consequentialism reveal a clear moral choice.” Or, “While a deontological analysis reveals a clear moral choice on this issue, a consequentialist analysis results in a murkier perspective.” Obviously, you’ll have to tailor this to your own essay/issue and your own ethical policy and process. 2.
Second, introduce, construct, and explain your own system of ethical reasoning and what it is based upon. This section should be a few paragraphs long. 3.
Third, analyze your dilemma from the point of view of your ethical system. If, for example, it is based on deontology, analyze your dilemma from the point of view of deontology, applying Kant’s categorical imperative. This section should be several paragraphs long. 4.
Fourth, bring things together, noting what conclusion you come to using your perspective
and how it is superior to what alternative perspectives had to offer for your particular dilemma.
