CI5033: Creating Safe and Supportive Classrooms
Dr. Susan Spero
November 6, 2021
My philosophy of education is that each child is different, and therefore deserves
individualized instruction tailored to them. My goal as an educator is to ensure that each
child’s needs, emotional, social, physical and academic, are met. I strive to create a classroom
environment where each child feels safe, loved and included. An environment where each
child can reach their full potential, and feels safe sharing ideas, being creative and being
themselves. Personal Philosophy of Learning
My path to becoming a teacher was not a straight line. I was about to graduate from
college with a degree in Communications, and yet I had no idea what I wanted to do with my
life. I knew it was not to sit behind a desk all day. I always loved being in school, and felt in my
heart that I could make a difference as a teacher. I enrolled in Graduate school and got my
teaching certificate. As an educator, I have realized that we must continue to learn, both formally and
informally, to keep our skills up to date. There are many ways to learn. I learn on a daily basis
from my colleagues in regards to classroom management, curriculum, and ways to support
children. I learn new things about my students each day that enable me to support them better
as learners and as human beings. I have a Master’s degree in Reading Instruction, and
continue to take courses to become a better teacher. Learning is a lifelong process where you
learn new strategies, ideas, and philosophies.
Goal Statements
One goal for my classroom is to teach students to think critically and problem solve. I
want my students to be able to evaluate and apply what they have learned in all subject areas.
I will teach students to pause, think and ask questions. I will ask them open ended questions
that encourage them to think on their feet and apply what they have learned. This also
strengthens decision making skills. A second goal that I have is to help my students develop strong interpersonal skills. As
teachers, we are not only teaching information, we are helping students build relationships
with other people. A classroom is it’s own society. We have many people with different beliefs
and backgrounds. We need to implicitly teach children how to navigate these relationships.
The classroom is the perfect place for teaching empathy, conversation skills, listening skills,
social skills and respect for each other and for our classroom. My third goal piggybacks off of my second goal. To build a strong classroom community
in which all of my students feel safe, loved and included. For many students, school is a safe
place. Their home lives may be unstable in many ways. Students, and humans, thrive on
consistency and routines. By creating a safe environment at school, students will be able to
form and maintain positive relationships
within the classroom, which will hopefully translate to
their relationships outside the classroom. I strive to improve myself daily as an educator. I believe that it one of the most
important jobs in our society. Teaching children to become productive members of society
involves so much more than academics. My goals are geared towards helping children to
