2 Week 6 Assignment Health Care Policies One of the most important aspects of a nurse's professionalism is ensuring patient safety during surgery. In the operating room, a lot of things are made to make sure that this important goal is met. Nonetheless, there are a lot of challenges that could impact the nursing profession as a whole in the pursuit of this goal. The nursing response is shaped by the exclusive goal of patient safety in the operating room, which is supported by a blend of leadership, diverse cultural backgrounds, and training behaviors. The aim of this essay is to discuss patient’s safety in the operating room and the policy issues that involves quality and safety. Nurse conduct and practice in the operating room, as well as patient safety, may be impacted by the procedures and policies employed to achieve the ultimate goal of patient safety, thus they should be thoroughly examined and assessed. Medication errors in operating rooms are unavoidable, but they can be avoided by building strong nurse-physician relationships. Especially in an operating room, a team of extremely competent medical personnel must share the common goal of enhancing the patient's wellness (Syed Muhammad Nazim & Syed Shahabuddin, 2022). Sharp object injuries are primarily caused by instruments that compromise the integrity of the skin, and they are typically preventable risk factors for nurses. Sharp object injuries can also be caused by shifting shifts, having too few nurses in operating rooms, having a high job turnover rate, and having lengthy work hours (Biparva et al., 2023). Since these units employ more hazardous surgical instruments than do other medical staff members (Biparva et al., 2023). Because of things like oxygen and laser use, operating rooms can catch fire. A major fire risk exists when heating combustible preparation materials. When temperatures rise, certain substances are prone to spontaneous
3 combustion (Gül, 2021). To prevent surgical fires and patient burns, extra care should be exercised if combustible preparation materials are being used (Gül, 2021). Employees in operating rooms should be adequately trained in the use of lasers and oxygen, as well as in fire prevention and extinguisher usage. Surgical site infections are among the most challenging postoperative consequences, posing an annual threat to millions of lives (Gül, 2021). According to available data, there is a positive correlation between the number of bacteria-carrying particles in the air and the infection rate. In order to reduce airborne bacterial pollution and manage infection risk, ventilation in the operating room is crucial (Gül, 2021). Modern air conditioning systems are required to reduce the chance of infection and maintain the microbe concentration at the lowest levels allowed by regulations (Biparva et al., 2023). Therefore, taking into account the biological and physical properties of the microorganisms, operating room ventilation systems should be planned and structured to prevent infections that develop in healthcare facilities and the workplace. In an increasingly cyberattack-prone environment, patient safety is jeopardized. Hospitals must also deal with the possibility of data breaches to patient safety (HIPAA Journal, 2022). According to HIPAA, during the previous three years, 41% of Americans' protected health information may have been compromised (HIPAA Journal, 2022). When implementing a comprehensive EHR systems, healthcare facilities should make sure that their provider assists them in maintaining and updating their records to comply with HIPAA regulations. In summary, the core of professionalism is ethics. It is a crucial component of surgery, as surgeons frequently encounter moral dilemmas in the course of their work. The necessity for the
