Practice Specific Concepts Swansons Theory of Caring is broken down into a set of five categories. The five categories are knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and maintaining belief. These categories are meant to serve as a guide into how the caregiver's attitude can impact and improve the patient's circumstance.  Maintaining Belief According to other references, maintaining belief is where caring starts and it includes a fundamental belief in individuals and their ability to overcome adversity and events that they may address in the future ( Theory of Caring and Healing ). Maintaining belief according to Swansons theory is "sustaining faith in the capacity of others to get through events or transitions and face a future with meaning, believing in the other person's capacity and holding him/her in high esteem, maintaining a hope-filled attitude, helping him/her to find meaning and standing by the one cared for" (Andershed & Olsson). Regarding Swansons theory maintaining belief is the basis of a patients care and that caring is directly related to having the basic belief in a person by first knowing what reality is to the other person (Andershed & Olsson).  Knowing  Knowing was defined by Swanson as " striving to understand an event as it has meaning in the life of the other person" (Andershed & Olsson). Swanson also states that with knowing, it is important to not take anything for granted but that you should listen to your patient and continue to observe and assess them to help in knowing more about their situation (Andershed & Olsson). Knowing according to Swanson is not just listening to what a person is saying to you but hearing what they are trying to explain. Pairing this with the continuous assessment that is completed while caring for a patient can ensure that you are taking care of the patient
to the best of your ability and making sure that you have a positive impact on their current situation. One way that this is implemented into my current nursing practice is by not just going off of what I observe in the patient but taking into account what they are trying to tell me along with their parents. Conclusion Through Swansons theory it is evident that her goal was to show the significance of caring in nursing and that caring is mandatory in nursing. One way that nurses can implement this theory more effectively is to research more about Swansons theory and how she defines it. This is a theory that takes a very personal approach to care provided in nursing and makes you effectively put yourself in another person's shoes to see how you are caring for them can impact them and potentially change their outcome for the better.  References Andershed, & Olsson, K.
