Educating Teachers on CPR My practicum involves educating elementary school teachers on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to children. As I was looking over Healthy People 2030, I was surprised to find an objective so closely related to my practicum. The objective on this webpage involved increasing the rate of bystander CPR for non-traumatic cardiac arrests. Cardiac arrests that happen outside the hospital are the leading cause of death in the United States (Healthy People 2030). When bystanders do CPR they can keep someone alive until emergency responders arrive. Strategies to increase bystanders’ willingness to do CPR are important for increasing cardiac arrest survival rates (Healthy People 2030). This week in my practicum we prepared and done some preplanning for the upcoming CPR education that my preceptor and I will begin next week. We reviewed what we would be teaching, developed a written guide to providing CPR, created a PowerPoint presentation, and I created a pre/post test to be able to determine the learning needs of the teachers that will be with us. We also cleaned and gathered supplies needed for the CPR skills checkoff. I enjoyed looking over the material. I have become so used to in-hospital BLS and ACLS, I enjoyed taking a step back and thinking about the limited resources you have with CPR outside the hospital.
