2 Theoretical and Ethical Perspectives 1. The nursing theory of caring by Jean Watson serves as a basis for appreciating the roles that nurses play in enhancing the health of their patients. As the theory of Watson stresses, nurses should be able to engage in genuine, compassionate care that is focused on the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of patients ( Watson’s Philosophy and Science of Caring - Nursing Theory , 2020). The above theory is very important in guiding my clinical practice as a nurse as it helps me have an empathetic, respectful and holistic approach to the patient’s care. 2. Theories of nursing provide the basis for practical research that addresses issues pertinent to the practice of nursing. Nursing theory can guide nursing research through exploration of concepts and relationships underlying evidenced-based interventions and practices. An example would be a research into the effects of compassionate care based on Watson’s theory of Caring. 3. a) In the article " Johns Hopkins' tragedy:Could librarians have prevented a death?” One of the ethical principles is the nonmaleficence which states that health care providers including librarians should not injure people. The medical librarians did not bother to follow up on the abnormal results from the blood sample, which resulted in delayed diagnosis and later the death of the patient (Perkins, 2001). This highlights the importance for nurses’ ethics and being vigilant in patient care. b) The nurses are very important in ensuring that the human research participants’ rights and welfare are protected during the research process. Obtaining informed consent from participants
3 and ensuring they understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives involved in the project. Besides, nurses have to maintain clients’ confidentiality and privacy and ensure patients’ safety and comfort to avoid inflicting unnecessary pain or stress on them. Nurses are also mandated to report any ethics related problems or issues to the concerned authorities if they occur. Nurses should ensure that ethical principles are adhered to in order to advocate for their patient’s and contribute to a more humane knowledge generation process where human dignity is put first.
