2 Issues in Today’s Workforce Culture In Chapter 60 of Mason et al. (2020) Policy and Politics in Nursing and Healthcare , the authors focus on the challenges facing the nursing profession and the reasons for the high turnover and the shortage of nurses. Despite the important role that nurses undertake in clinical settings and in the delivery of healthcare, and the need for more nurses, there continues to be an acute shortage of nurses. Mason et al. (2020) highlight several reasons that contribute to the continued shortage of nurses and the cultural issues that nurses are facing in clinical settings. One of the issues highlighted in the chapter is the challenge of retaining nurses. Over the years, the rate of nursing turnover has been significantly high. Many nurses are choosing to quit the profession and join other profession or quit without necessarily changing professions. This is a major challenge as it contributes to a continued shortage of nurses. Various reasons contribute towards the high rate of turnover, especially amongst nurses who are relatively new in the profession. One of the provided reasons is the tough working condition in many clinical settings. Nurses are expected to endure long working hours and be available for sudden changes in schedule. This often results in a challenge in effectively managing life-work balance. The long working hours often affect nurses’ life such as relationship with families and friends (Melnyk, 2020). If such persists, nurses choose to quit their employment to lead a healthy work-life balance. In addition, it is important to understand that nursing is a naturally challenging profession. It can be an emotionally challenging profession, especially when things do not go as planned. Errors that can lead to injury to the patient can lead to mental anguish. Ethical dilemma involving patients can also be a challenge to nurses. Losing patients is another challenge that nurses also face (McDermind et al., 2020). Conflicts with fellow nurses and other clinicians such as physicians is another challenge that nurses experience in their clinical settings. Poor
3 working conditions such as lack of proper safety equipment is also another challenge that nurses face. At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, videos surfaced of nurses working without appropriate protective gear. Nurses were amongst the clinicians who were worst affected by Covid-19 infections and mortality. This led to many nurses choosing to quit employment. All these provide reasons for nurses to quit employment and can lead to a high turnover. f clinical settings do not have a way of dealing with these issues, the mental challenge that nurses experience can be a reason to quit the employment. Developing a strong work culture that strives to solve the challenges that nurses face can help in curbing the high nursing turnover. For instance, a strong work culture can help prevent conflicts amongst nurses and other clinicians. A culture of togetherness can foster strong relationships amongst clinicians. In addition, a good work culture must also consider the importance of work-life balance. These steps can help in curbing the high turnover rate amongst nurses.
