This is one of the weeks I look forward to in this program, learning about various medications, the mode of operation in the body system, their side effects, and roles of NP in medication prescriptions. I learnt that there are legal rights to prescription drugs with authority regulations from the state law which includes the state board of nursing and the state board of medicine or pharmacy. This week gave me a clear in-depth into why there are restrictions to NP practicing independently in some states. Regardless of Np practicing independently a close monitoring by the DEA makes it easy to trail who and when medications are prescribed, all prescribers are assigned a DEA number that must be reflected on the prescription weather paper or E-script (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2020). The role of nurse practitioners in educating patients on the importance of medication compliance, side effects and follow up post discharge for a better patient outcome cannot be overlooked or overemphasized in the present health care system. Aside from the patient compliance, the NP also sees to the patient having an easy access to their medications by putting into consideration the cost, availability, and interactions of patient’s medications, collaborating with other providers to ensure that patient is not prescribed same medication using both generic and brand name, appropriate route of administration (Burchum & Rosenthal, 2020). Learning that both pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are considered in the choice of medication prescribed to patients is another big term in relation to medication management and prescription.
