Dear Advance Monticellonian, I am writing to express my concern about the current state of mental health protections in our community for children and adolescents in need of them. Despite the fact that some legislative efforts have been made in recent years to address this issue, I believe that there is still much to be done to ensure that all young people have access to the diagnosis and treatment that they need to maintain their mental wellness. It should be noted that the Mental Health in Schools Act, which was introduced in 2021, is one piece of legislation that I believe is a step in the right direction. The purpose of this bill is to provide schools with the funding required to hire additional mental health professionals, train teachers and staff on how to identify and respond to mental health concerns and provide resources for students and their families. Additionally, I support the Mental Health Access Improvement Act, which is intended to increase the number and accessibility of mental health services for Medicaid-eligible individuals. Although I believe that we can take additional measures in order to improve mental health protections for children and adolescents, I think that there are additional measures that we can take. A significant addition to existing legislation would be to require mental health education to be taught in schools as one of the requirements. The school can play a significant role in reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and promoting early intervention for those who need it by providing students with information about mental health and strategies for coping with stress and anxiety. The funding for mental health research and treatment is also an important issue that I believe must be increased. Mental illness is a complex and multifaceted issue, and as a society,
we need to do more to understand its causes and develop effective treatments for it in order to combat it. In addition, we need to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status or access to health insurance, are able to access and afford mental health services. I would like to conclude by saying that mental health legislation is crucial to the protection of the well-being of our children and adolescents within our communities. By funding mental health services, education, and research, we can ensure that all young people have the support they need to thrive. Let's work together to prioritize mental health and make it a priority in our community. Sincerely, Monisa Allen
