APN Professional Development Plan Student Name Chamberlain University: Nurse Practitioner Track NR500NP Foundational Concepts and Advanced Practice Roles Instructor Date (e.g. July 1, 2021)
APN Professional Development Plan A professional development plan is a perfect way to ensure that an individual has a working framework that can help them enhance the necessary skills and resources needed to support their career and professional goals. Adjusting these skills and resources is targeted to help the individual meet the basic requirements of a targeted career. The purpose of the discussion below is to illustrate a professional development plan for an individual seeking to serve as an Advanced Practicing Nurse (APRN). The plan below takes the format of a discussion and focuses on illustrating an APRN's scope of practice within the state of Florida. The scope of practice within Florida varies from the national standards and those from other states. Understanding these scope of practice will inform the types of leadership and competency skills that a nurse must implement to ensure they achieve the goal of becoming an APRN. The targeted APRN role is to serve as a CPNA specified within the dermatology unit. Below is an illustration of the Florida APRN scope of practice. Advanced Practice Nurse Scope of Practice The Florida APN scope of practice is covered within the Nurse Practice Act. The roles are specified to be four. As a training nurse, I would like to serve as a certified nurse practitioner. Serving as a CPN is based on achieving nursing education, achieving certification demands, and the regulatory accumulated experience. As a CPN, the scope of practice includes making diagnoses, making health assessments, and completing patient education. The CPNs are expected to offer more specific care than their registered nurse counterparts. For example, I intend to deliver within the dermatology unit. Such care specification within the various units is only permitted for APRNs who have achieved specific model training.
The Florida state scope of practice is anchored on three essential requirements. These requirements can be divided into educational, licensure, and regulatory. Below is an elaboration of each of the requirements to practice as an APRN. These requirements are supposed to ensure that a nurse qualifies for delivering safe practice. Any practicing nurse who does not meet these requirements is subject to prohibition from practice. These aspects are specified in the Florida Nurse Practice Act. Educational Requirements The first educational requirement is to achieve a post-graduate level nursing education. A post-graduate level education in nursing includes a master's or a doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. Additionally, the expert must have passed the examination offered by the Florida Nursing Board. The examination contains various models of particularity depending on the type of practice. The certification examination is more complicated for individuals seeking to serve as APRNs than for those seeking to serve as registered nurses. These programs cost approximately $ 19,845. The costs illustrated above are only academic without the inclusion of living expenses. Below are some licensure requirements. Licensure Requirements To obtain the license one must apply to the Florida Board of Nursing. The online application costs $299. The maintenance of the license is dependent on the following aspects. First, licensure requirement is to have served as a registered nurse within the state of Florida. The person must have an RN license and an experience of at least twenty-four months of continuous practice. The second is to pass the Florida licensure certification examination. The Florida licensure examination takes eleven days to achieve results. Finally, the nurse must have been

trained on the specific role that they need to take. For example, a nurse interested in serving the dermatology department must have specified training on how the skin functions. The training is known as preceptorship training, which occurs within one academic year. The licensure examination costs $299 when taken online. The nurse must have never taken the licensure examination and failed. These are the requirements it takes to get the operating licensure within the Florida state. As an individual nursing student, I will achieve these requirements within a year. Regulatory Requirement The regulatory requirements are implemented for the purpose of public health, safety, and welfare. NPs are regulated through regulations and policies dictated to the various nursing facilities. The first level of protection is to ensure that the applicants have no criminal record history. There are no special certifications except clearance from the various authorities. The regulation is completed after every year. They are more than one option including the aspects illustrated below. Apart from having no history of criminal records, the individual should have served under a qualified physician for a period of not less than twenty-four months. Part of the regulatory requirements include compliance with the nursing codes and principles. The discussion above summarizes the requirements and scope of practice of serving as a CPNA. Below are some of the core competencies required to become a CPNA, which is a role under the approved APRN nursing requirements. Practice Authority
Practice authority means holding a valid license to serve as a nurse. Florida is a restricted practice state. As a result, the board only allowed APRNs to deliver on specific mandate within the state. Florida licensure also means only serving in Florida and not any other state. An APRN has the practice authority to diagnose, evaluate, assess, and interpret diagnostic tests of an affected client. The APRN also has the opportunity to initiate and manage a patient's treatment plan. All these are practice authorities that influence the way an APRN will deliver their care. Prescriptive Authority Prescriptive authority is different from practice authority. Prescriptive authority is about nurses implementing specific medications to patients, including controlled substances. Only those with original signed protocols have prescriptive privileges. It is accurate to realize that in the state of Florida, APRNs cannot prescribe controlled substances. The state nursing licensure is enough to help achieve and keep prescriptive authority. However, they can only dispense controlled substances when they take a special license. The rest of the substance the APRN can be permitted to prescribe. A special certification is needed to prescribe controlled substance. Even with the certification, the help of a physician is recommended before prescription. Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies The Nurse Practitioner's core competencies are essential because they guide the demonstrative skills one possesses, enabling them to achieve the desired goal of becoming a CPN. This section of the plan illustrates possessed skills that help realize the most essential nursing competencies. Competency Areas that are personally strong There is also a plan on how to uplift the competencies yet to be gained. The first competency skill I possess is the ability to offer patient-centered care and collaborate with other
officials. Patient-centered care and holistic care competency come naturally to me since I use communication to create trust and understand the patient's needs. The second competency that I possess is the ability to collaborate. Teamwork competency comes naturally to me because I am teachable and consistently seek to learn. The ability to attempt learning always makes collaborating and gaining ideas from colleagues easier. Competency Areas where there is room for growth Despite having perfect nursing competency and skills, others need improvement. The first aspect that needs improvement is the aspect of cultural competency. I need to relate better with the modern cultures that are not part of my age. Aspects of diversity, like accepting people's sexuality, culture, and tradition, are pretty challenging. As a result, there is a need to participate in cultural aspects that can help improve cultural competency (Tucker, 2020). Another competency that needs improvement is evidence-based practice competency. Converting research into practice is quite challenging without guidance. Integrating received knowledge through practice during care is more straightforward than implementing knowledge from research. As a result, training on implementing evidence-based practice learned from research is necessary. Below is a plan to improve competency areas requiring room for growth. Scholarly activities that require growth The primary scholarly activity that could help improve cultural competency is cultural training. Various organizations offer cultural training to nurses to connect to the minority and the diverse community. Another scholarly activity to pursue to help improve the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) is attending online nursing webinars and seminars where, as a certified nurse, it is possible to deliver quality care. Online webinars is access to the best nurses

on the planet. These nurses offer training on how to incorporate research into practice. It is then accurate to consider the two scholarly activities perfect Leadership Skills Three Leadership Skills Required to Lead in Complex Systems APRNs need to possess essential leadership skills. Possessing these leadership skills informs their ability to deliver in terms of decision-making, quality care, and critical thinking. The first leadership skill is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is often defined as the ability to perceive, use, manage, and handle emotions to the best of their ability. The importance of EI to Nurse Practitioners (NPs) is to help interact with patients, influencing their ability to make the correct healthcare decisions (Bakerjian, 2022). Another leadership skill and model is problem-solving abilities. Problem-solving ability skills are perfect for realizing solutions despite the presence of obstacles. As an NP, there are many obstacles. Problem-solving abilities allow healthcare experts to eliminate these problems and achieve solutions that are good for healthcare and business. Finally, conflict resolution is some perfect leadership skills. Conflict resolution involves managing two parties to find a peaceful solution with limited disagreement. Many Nurse Practitioners (NPs) exist in an environment with disputes (Kimble, 2022). The perfect way to resolve these agreements is to possess conflict resolution. Below are two strategies to help a nurse practitioner learn various leadership skills. Two Strategies to Help Develop NP Leadership Skills The first strategy is to take management and leadership courses. For the six months during the internship program, taking a course in leadership and management will help develop
essential leadership skills. The second strategy is adopting a mentor. The mentor program allows me to acquire leadership skills from other established nurses, especially during the preceptor period. Conclusion In conclusion, the professional plan illustrates the basic requirements to help me become an APRN. The first section with a scope of practice helps analyze what it takes to become an NP or a CPN within the state of Florida. Additionally, the plan ensures that I have a process of how to acquire the required nursing licensure and qualification. The second section is the competency section proving aspects that when improved makes it easier for me to realize my professional growth in becoming an ideal nurse. The leadership skills section proves the relevance of having unique abilities of serving as a decision maker within a unit. In terms of the requirements and the licensure, there is uniqueness in understanding each of them as it shows the desired journey to become a licensed practicing APRN. The plans illustrated above are a perfect way to help achieve the goal of becoming an Advanced Practicing Registered Nurse with the CPNA role to operate at the dermatology unit.
